It is tradition in black protestant Churches to vote after Church on the Sunday before the election. Numerous states have election laws that allow for early voting on Sunday. It's a day where black people are a disproportionate number of the voters because of that tradition. And since black people vote overwhelmingly Democrat, Sunday voting is a boon to Democratic voter turnout. This change in voting law is designed to surpress that in the most obvious way imaginable. This is less subtle than the poll taxes and literacy tests that were part of the original Jim Crow voter suppression.
It's designed to go after the different voting patterns of demographics and won't affect everyone equally.

krose wrote:There is a peculiar mental illness in the right fringe of the GOP. They actually believe, in earnest, that there is widespread voter fraud happening, and that it's the only reason Democrats win.
The fact that there is no evidence of such fraud (or frankly, the fact that voter identity fraud would be a really stupid and ineffective way to try to rig an election) means nothing. They just know in their gut it's happening. It's Truthiness.

Thank you, Brother faq. Thank you.
Thanks, krose. Voter fraud is 'truthy'. Voter fraud fits the Republican narrative. And sadly, the control of the Republican party is increasingly in the hands of those who believe in narratives, rather than those who examine the facts.

What's happening is that voting behavior that is disproportionately Democrat and heavily disproportionately black is being banned because of that reason. Ohio attempted this prior to the 2012 election before it was struck down. Blacks have get out the vote organization structured around early Sunday voting, so that was eliminated to crush that voter turnout apparatus.
Do you think literacy tests denied black people the right to vote? After all, everyone has the chance to become literate. And don't you want a literate voting base? What do you think the point of the literacy tests was?

And you of course read the Supreme Court opinion, right?
Droopy, tell me about the "fundamental principle of equal sovereignty" that is enshrined in the Constitution. Where can I learn more about the history and application of this heretofore unknown fundamental principle?
By the way, Droopy, the Voting Rights Act was enacted by democratically-accountable legislators who represent the will of the people. Why should unelected, unaccountable gnostic Platonists even be deciding whether this political matter fits their caricature of the Constitution, which they probably have never even read? Surely this is an issue for the free marketplace of ideas, not the courtroom.

You mean an "imagined" tradition of "black only" and "most blacks".....
You simply don't know what you are talking about. A small # of black Churches as well as white churches have this tradition, and it's somehow "racist". haa haa You people make me laugh.

Not like Jim Crow at all. Democrats are allowed to vote on election day like anyone else. Early voting, when actually enforced, removes the ability to change one's mind before election day. It's a bad idea, especially for Democrats who are full of October surprises.

Because, like, Republicans were all excluded from early voting and Sunday voting and stuff.

Wait.
Are you calling Black people illiterate?
And, again... How are they being denied the right to vote?

You do realize Democrats were behind Black suppression until the realized the political benefits of changing position?
