I think it is clear that Comey could have been fired for improper treatment of Hillary Clinton's cases. The FBI's behavior under Comey there was legitimately scandalous. There would have been justification to clean house of those responsible. The problem for Trump is that this was a fig leaf cover for the motive to obstruct the Russia investigation.
I'm not sure how McCabe strengthening the case against Comey would change this dynamic. That's not why Comey was fired. Trump, being an epic moron, confessed to his obstructive intent.

McCabe was such a danger to this country they decided to let him go 26 hours before retirement. There is a type of sadism that Trump seems to really relish.

"I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe's boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt dossier," Dowd told CNN in a statement, reacting to the news of McCabe's firing.
Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, is overseeing the Russia investigation after Sessions recused himself from the probe last year.
Dowd told CNN he was speaking on his own behalf, although he had earlier told the Daily Beast, which first reported the statement, that he was speaking on behalf of the President. Dowd's comment wasn't authorized by the President, a person close to the Trump told CNN. Dowd also later added to his statement, saying of the investigation: "Just end it on the merits in light of recent revelations."
Yeah. He said that.

No doubt he has a hard on for Trump. He will try and bring anything but won’t be what he was hired to do.
I would probably indict him for the economy and job creation.
I'll take that bet, persona #2.

Former CIA director Michael Hayden Wednesday implied Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is acting as a “useful idiot” in his refusal to denounce the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Asked by CNN’s Jake tapper about an op-ed written by former CIA deputy director Mike Morell that referred to Trump as an unwitting agent” of Putin, Hayden declined to use Morell’s description, opting instead to launch into a description of his own.
“There’s a phrase in Russian espionage-lore about ‘useful idiots’: people who don’t know what they’re doing but then do things that seem to fit what the Russians would like them to do.” Hayden said.

A Democratic lawmaker on Saturday offered to hire former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe in an effort to help McCabe qualify to receive his pension after being fired from the agency two days before he qualified to receive it.
Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) was responding to a tweet from NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, who said the former FBI official might still be able to receive his pension if he’s hired by a member of Congress.
“Andrew call me. I could use a good two-day report on the biggest crime families in Washington, D.C.,” Pocan tweeted.
