ps- I should add that I don't support any sort of pledge of allegiance because I find it cult-like, shaming for those who don't want to participate, and weird. I don't know what to really do with that other than not participate.

Aren't you a military man? How did you get by with not reciting it in the military?
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

I can't speak for Doc, but I do not recall reciting the pledge as a soldier. There are times we saluted the colors and one takes an oath to support and defend the Constitution when joining or reupping. I guess the pledge is a civilian thing.

Well, when you're in the military it's a rule you must salute the flag if in uniform. I just find it bizarre we *more or less* require it from the civilian population. Americans like to think ourselves as a bit edgy when it comes to the government telling us what to do, so I find it interesting so many are so willing to stand en masse, put their hands over their hearts, and pledge an allegiance to a flag. It feels like a compliance test to me. That's all, really.

Doesn't unification require compliance to some degree? And within a unified, dare I say united, society is this degree not required to be exhibited/witnessed among its members.

Maybe. There are plenty of countries where their government and borders are sacrosanct and they don't conduct allegiance rituals to a flag.

True that a ritual to a flag is not a requirement - but a ritual of sorts exists nonetheless - being sacrosanct requires overt acts of compliance.
Point being, a public display of fidelity and "membership" is, arguably, a necessary foundation for the genesis and continuance of any clan, society, or citizenry.

I think it's a really effective way to inculcate national identity. I'm not really sure why it bothers me, To be honest. I did it in school. I was an Eagle Scout. Military retiree. SERE school. All that business. So, who knows...

I think everyone should have to fight to defend or even enlarge America's borders if necessary. It should be a responsibility of all citizens who are given the right to vote.

Enlarge our boarders? What, make them wider? You want the boarders to be some kind of no-man's-land?

Are you a hermit, ajax? If not, why do you live among other people? Do you secretly wish everyone was a white male Rapublican?
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Let's see .. have we heard this before anywhere?

The semi-ironic patriotic fervour starts at 2:30 if you like that kind of thing ...

But I really don't recommend it. Saying that kind of thing out loud as if you meant it tends to make other countries feel nervous ... reasonably enough.
