... why should I care what a president does or doesn't do with his family during his down-time?
Because a person's attitude towards their own family can bear a significant relation with their behaviour in a more public context. It is a useful, though of course not infallible, clue in forming a judgment of their overall moral character.
I'd say refusing to trot out one's family for photo ops during vacation time is more honest than doing the opposite.
We were talking about how people actually relate to their families 'during their down-time', weren't we? But I notice a tendency nowadays for you to say, after criticism, that you were really talking about something different from what you appeared to be talking about.

Nope. My point is that just because a president doesn't bring the photographers around for a mass-consumption photo op doesn't mean his activities with his family are any less Norman Rockwell-esque than the presidents who DO bring the photographers around for a mass-consumption photo op.
Photographs or not, what a president does with his family during his down time is none of my concern. If it SHOULD be my concern, then I don't think photo ops for mass consumption are indicative of what really takes place when the photographers aren't around.
Springsteen is SO spot on with that sentiment(s)...
I disagree. All those touchy-feely photos of other Presidents playing with their families were nothing more than photo ops. Trump just isn't bothering to stage such spectacles.
Besides, why should I care what a president does or doesn't do with his family during his down-time? Or what pets he does or doesn't have? It has no effect on anyone whatsoever.
First paragraph: I agree that posting photos of your family proves nothing about said family and your relations with them.
Second paragraph: a president's down-time relations with his family, are likely to be a reflection of his general character as a person. If, for instance, it was to come to my notice that he was a neglectful or cruel parent, that would negatively impact my view of his fitness for office. I think most people would agree that this was a reasonable attitude. Do you disagree?
