A question about this. If a 'remain in Mexico' policy is in place, how does an applicant attend a hearing in a US court on their appointed day? Are they escorted across the border and to the court?

According to the DHS website link I put up earlier,

How Will MPP Work Operationally?

Certain aliens attempting to enter the U.S. illegally or without documentation, including those who claim asylum, will no longer be released into the country, where they often fail to file an asylum application and/or disappear before an immigration judge can determine the merits of any claim. Instead, these aliens will be given a “Notice to Appear” for their immigration court hearing and will be returned to Mexico until their hearing date.

While aliens await their hearings in Mexico, the Mexican government has made its own determination to provide such individuals the ability to stay in Mexico, under applicable protection based on the type of status given to them.

Aliens who need to return to the U.S. to attend their immigration court hearings will be allowed to enter and attend those hearings. Aliens whose claims are found meritorious by an immigration judge will be allowed to remain in the U.S. Those determined to be without valid claims will be removed from the U.S. to their country of nationality or citizenship.

According to the reports and filings challenging it, it seems the basic method was to have them show up at the appropriate port of entry on the day of the hearing when they'd then be escorted to the court. But they've also tried televised hearings and had logistical issues. Sounds about right, since the purpose is only to keep them out of the US not resolve the cases expeditiously.

It's worth noting that the DHS link includes exaggeratedly false claims that haven't held up to scrutiny regarding the number of asylum seekers who were not attending their hearings. EA posted on this earlier in the thread.

It would seem that if there's a complaint about asylum seekers not attending their hearings, then I don't see that the new system guarantees that they would do so any more than before, if petitioners are simply allowed to cross the border and make their way to the hearing/courthouse on their own... or choose to keep walking. Therefore I don't see that any new Trump policy can be claimed to be more effective than a prior policy, in that regard. But maybe I'm just missing something there.

In tangentially related news:

Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia have seized a container ship operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Co., weeks after authorities found more than $1 billion worth of cocaine on the vessel in what was one of the largest drug busts in American history.

US Customs and Border Protection seized the ship on July 4, a statement out Monday said. The ship is owned by client assets in a maritime strategy offered by JPMorgan Asset Management, according to a person familiar with the matter. It is operated by the Switzerland-based MSC.

On June 17, border agents found 39,525 pounds of cocaine stashed in several containers on the MSC Gayane at the Philadelphia seaport. The street value of the drugs was estimated at about $1.3 billion, making it the largest cocaine seizure by the agency.

canpakes, this was just a lucky shot in the dark by Customs Agents. I'm sure this was the very first time anyone has ever smuggled cocaine into Philadelphia. Well, maybe not. Ever been to an Eagles game? Not all the snow in the stands is on the ground.

honorentheos wrote:Evidence would look like numbers of asylum seekers being processed per day being granted access into the States to await their hearings. The claim was that it's easy and thousands a day are being let in. That sounds quantifiable as far as claims go.

My issue is with you saying it's easy to get in. This, despite the huge and growing number of asylum seekers being kept out of the country in Mexico. With the implimentation and courts upholding the MPPs, it's even less likely an immigrant will ever do more than visit a courthouse in the US, and that is unlikely to happen within months of arriving at the border.

Nothing you've shared supports the erroneous claim it's easy for asylum seekers to get in. The Trump administration has been keen to overturn the so called catch and release policies of the Obama admin which led to the original problem with forced separations and now doing everything possible to delay or prevent asylum seekers from being able to get an interview to start the process.

It seems your opinion is a combination of some facts about the process combined with conservative talk radio fear lingering points and your nephews anecdotes about what it takes to get past the initial assessment to begin interviews that determine if a candidate will in fact be allowed in to await a hearing.

Nonsense and spin. You have ducked the real issue of what I have been writing. And now you double down spinning what I write about being well coached, into more global remark of ease getting through the process. In one breath you state what I write is wrong, yet in another you offer nothing but spin. You live in Arizona and know about desert crossings and that is some how credible, and yet you criticize and mock first hand information from my nephew.

LOL...what "conservative talk radio" do I listen to, and what fear am I taking to heart? What is your opinion based on?

Markk, I'm curious if you believe I have taken issue with the idea an asylum seeker who has been coached on the specific words that will be most likely to require their receiving a follow-up evaluation who obtains an initial interview is very likely to move past the interview to be released in the US at any point in the period since the precipitous rise in arrivals from Central America? Do you believe I am or have in this thread taken issue with that idea?

I believe i is impossible t get you to comment on the real problem and issue with the border...you ignore my question and just look for ways to spin away from them.

Your telling me what you believe is always a challenge unless it is just a left leaning blanket talking point.

You accusing me of using observation as a benchmark, such living in So Ca, and discussing the issues with people that are actually on the border, then you imply ignorantly I am some kind of herald for conservative talk radio...all the time avoid the real Issue.

I’ll state this and see how you respond...”what ever you think of Trump...he is the only President that is actually dealing with a porous border. And my position is that is good, for several reasons I outlined in this thread, that you ducked.”

The Detention centers are designed, by past administrations to hold someone for around 72 hours...given the influx of people coming to the centers, lacking funds to handle it...what should Trump do, and what should the Democratic house do?

Like I asked...should we open the border? Let them wander in the desert and pretend it is not happening by not policing it?

Your Embellishing what I wrote about coaching, is nothing more than a dodge to the real questions I brought up, which deals with the root of the issue.
