I have this Ada Jones and Billy Murray Cylinder recording. I've played it on an Edison Amberola model 50 from about 1915. It is a shame OH YOU SILVERY BELLS! is no longer heard during the holidays; however, I bring it to you now as a slice of a time long gone... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ct1zvN7rJCg

Here is another song that has been long forgotten. I have this one on a acoustic Victor 78rpm from 1913. The copy I have was recorded by the Peerless Quartet. The song is titled GOODBYE SUMMER! SO-LONG FALL! HELLO WINTERTIME! Lets get this back among the Christmas music ----- http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/3423/

Today marks the anniversary of the opening night of H.M.S. Pinafore! This is most likely the most famous of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas . It has to be among the most enjoyable. So in honor of this auspicious occasion I bring you one of my most favorite song from that operetta ---- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLIyWcxPlEU

When I was a little kid, we would go to Philadelphia to see the Christmas displays. Lit Brothers Department Store had their ENCHANTED VILLAGE. GIMBELS had various walk through attractions. One year it was Zorro's Christmas Hacienda --- in later years it was the Charles Dickens Village. But the king of them all was John Wanamaker's Christmas light extravaganza in their Grand Court. At noon they waould also incorporate the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair Organ. Originally John Facenda (the Walter Cronkite of Philadelphia) was the announcer viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35799&start=147 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV6qoln1ZRA
The 1996 video is a two parter so just wait a moment when it seems to end. You will also see the living fountains at the base of the tree---- they originally swayed with the music. They have been removed from the recent shows. At the beginning you may get a feel for the building excitement before the start of the show. The original show was not computerized and the lights were not LEDs. The tree is some twenty feet above the grand ground floor. The show was always free to the general public as it is today. The tree darkens and the show begins...... Merry Christmas!
Something special about John Wanamaker http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/theymadeamerica ... er_hi.html
Among the Stores FIRSTS: Wanamaker's was the first department store with electrical illumination (1878), first store with a telephone (1879), and the first store to install pneumatic tubes to transport cash and documents (1880).

Here is a lovely vintage, Philadelphia area, Christmas Program from the mid 50's that I once watched yearly for a far back as I can remember. It was sponsored by Bell Telephone Co. It was called The Spirit of Christmas and was performed by marionettes. First The Night Before Christmas followed by The Nativity. Hope you all enjoy this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OB0Lf5CKDM
