Baby steps. Explain to me how raising the membership fees of Mar a Lago have anything to do with him declaring it his winter white house?

Tell me why you think that?

I didn't say the causation ran that way. If Trump had said, "To prevent conflicts of interest, I won't be staying at Mar a Lago four the next four years," do you think the membership fee would have doubled?

We can't really tell, can we, without seeing the paperwork. You think we're going to get to see that? He may be giving up income and control for four years, but his kids will have control. And then in four years, he can have them back. In the meantime, because he knows what his businesses are, he can funnel money to them like all good banana republic dictators do. We saw him orchestrate his campaign to funnel money to his businesses. Why should we expect him to do anything different now?

How would he funnel money to his businesses? Where would the money come and how would he pull that off?

The same way he did it in the campaign. Use the services of his own business and overcharge.

Please, let's! That's my point! Wait! Are emoluments skin moisturizers? Is that something Trump sells on line? ;-)

Seriously, eyes on the prize. Go after him for conflict of interest. I do not have a problem with that. None. nada. zilch. zip. goose egg. bagel. I'll write you a check, at least metaphorically. I think we're on the same side of the street here.

If I recall correctly, President of the US is the one political office not constrained by conflicts of interest, though most, if not all other Presidents made it a point to avoid conflicts of interest, or, at least, the appearance thereof. So we can't legally go after him for mere conflicts of interest. Going after him violation of the emolument clause would seem to be valid, however.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I have no way of knowing the answer to that. Have the rates gone up before, if so how much? How often?

How ...

Meanwhile the rest of us can, I hope, get on with the normal practice of making practical judgements of likelihood in the real world? I mean, since for better or for worse we are actually in that world rather than in a college philosophy class?

Let's see:

Trump spends years promoting his name as a brand on hotels and resorts, the aim being to make gazillions by the use of said name and brand.
Trump owns major luxury resort called Mar a Lago.
Trump becomes President, declares said resort to be his 'Winter White House'.
Trump then doubles membership fees for said resort.

Duckcheck initiation:

Looks like? Check
Walks like? Check
Quacks like? Check

Yup, we'll go with 'duck'.

What does him using it as his winter white house got to do with the rates going up?

You aren't understanding what I am asking, Chap, so knock off the mockery. What's the connection between the winter white house and the increased membership rates? What's the rationale for upping the rates? You think a bunch of people are going to join the club to rub elbows with the President? What?

That's what I'm asking. Would you like to answer my questions? I don't need a primer on what Trump owns and how he built his fortune. I'm from the EC for pete sakes, like I don't already know.

You really need my help with any of that?
