Every notification I received had a name attached, but this one didn't. It seemed like a general anonymous notification.
Anyway here is an article I think every Facebook user should read. Note in particular the comments section, which is more important than the article itself.
Note this comment from a hacker (not the only one to comment either):

I'm sorry to hear this Ray. I really enjoyed seeing your family pictures and getting to know more about you.
I'm sorry you had such a crappy experience too. That kind of thing would really piss me off as well. Thanks for the heads-up on anonymous notifications!
From the Ernest L. Wilkinson Diaries: "ELW dreams he's spattered w/ grease. Hundreds steal his greasy pants."

Thanks Blixa. I thought Facebook was great in many ways, and I actually saw family photos from other relatives I'd never seen before, but alas, I think my fears are justified. There are too many weirdos snooping around, for my comfort.

Ray: It was good putting a face to your name on Facebook. I try not to add too many applications and have all my privacy settings at Friends Only. I don't know how much that helps, but I haven't had any weird things happen to me yet. If I do, I'm gone.

I'm not sure how much that helps when all my friends install all sorts of applications. Furthermore, they'll post about me even when I'm gone. So basically I figure I'm screwed either way and I make the best of it by limiting what they say about me and what I say about myself. Pictures and names are fine, but I tend to avoid stating my opinion on controversial matters. Mostly I prefer either friendly banter or simply arguing for argument's sake instead of to persuade others to my POV.
That's General Leo. He could be my friend if he weren't my enemy. eritis sicut dii I support NCMO

Ditto SK, always enjoyed your pics and your sense of humour. I had "friends only" too. I just didn't find it very amusing for someone to be asking me hypotheticals about others' sexuality (and where did they get all this information?). The gossip mill is already bad enough. Two of my children are on Facebook, and it was a neat way to chat without the expense of a phone call, but since I'm floating in riches and worldly pride I can always do the calling from now on.

Do what my peers do and use an instant messenger program--either MSN, Yahoo, or Google. Most of us even have web-cams so we can see each other while chatting if we want (although that's rare).

That's exactly what I'm thinking of. I'm probably the odd one out, since my daughter and son use MSN already. I gave away messanger programs years ago because too many women were hitting on me.
