It is the setting of a traditional latin mass to Barber's Adagio for strings.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. which means:
Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
The composer, Samuel Barber, was gay.
It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener at war.
Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality. ~Bill Hamblin
moksha wrote:Three good stories with the moral punch you are looking for are found in Three Tales (Trois Contes) by Gustave Flaubert. My favorite of the three is The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitalier.
In the tale A Simple Heart, the Holy Ghost takes the form of a pet parrot. If you are a confirmed Conservative you might ask, "why not the form of an American eagle"? Well, the answer is simple: Flaubert was French.
I briefly looked into them and they look good, thanks for the suggestion, Moksha.
If it is of any help, Flaubert had a passing resemblance to Dr. Daniel C. Peterson:

Sometimes those who are the most tormented are the one who fully understand the ramifications of their sin, and its end result...
John 3:16 New International Version (NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

- Whenever a poet or preacher, chief or wizard spouts gibberish, the human race spends centuries deciphering the message. - Umberto Eco - To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei

Thanks, Moksha. I don't know who that other guy is, but as I read a bit about the first of those stories you mentioned first, I resonated, so maybe I'll look into it more. You know, I was thinking it would be cool to put together some good messages - narrated or just recorded on youtube and in place of speeches full of cognitive distortions given in October and April, spend the weekend, being enlightened by people who understand the difference between polarized thinking and thinking with integrity, and maybe even some intrapersonal intelligence to boot!
