Post by _cinepro »

The LA Times recently had a good series on homelessness:

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editoria ... story.html

Unsurprisingly, they emphasize that the problem is a severe lack of housing.

From an economic perspective, the theory would be that the high housing costs in LA would signal to people that there isn't enough housing here and that they need to move elsewhere (where the lower housing prices are signaling more availability).

But for whatever reason, there seem to be a lot of people that meet this conundrum with the preference for living on the street or in their cars instead of moving.

No I didn't, but im starting to see that reading comprehension is not something i should expect from you.

lol - so I was right when I said I assumed you included oc in your comments about how horrible "SO CA" has become. You really don't understand the things I write do you? Im starting to doubt you even understand the things you write but lets see...

Markk wrote:I stated there are homeless in that park at the orange park next to Ruby's, that is the truth...and they shoot drugs, I picked up their needle when they were in the alley before I fenced them out..that is just the truth.

So? Nobody denied you found a needle somewhere but you continue to go off the rails is when you try to use your anecdotal experiences to claim that "SO CA" is getting worse and in a decline. Again, using the orange circle to make that point is just idiotic. AGAIN, nobody doubts you found a needle near the orange circle, your problem is that you make sweeping, ignorant statements based on your very abnormal personal experiences. I mean, for fooks sake, you live in yucaipa, YOU don't EVEN LIVE HERE, I DO! But, of course your shallow experiences in the areas I live, own (and have owned many) properties and work somehow Trump my experiences because, reasons.

Maybe go back and read some of the things you have written about immigrants, just the fact that ajax wholeheartedly agrees with your assessments of immigrants should be telling enough but I think your comments speak for themselves...

Again, what are you hoping to show? That califonia sucks and is in some kind of a decline because of the way people live on skid row? I have actually delivered unwanted bikes to people in the encampments in OC, I have helped fix bikes, it is exactly as I explained. For the love of Christ, you are all over the place. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO PROVE BY WALKING THROUGH SKID ROW WITH ME? That there are all kinds of people in all kinds of different situations with all kinds of problems??? If that is it, then guess what, I HAVE SAID THAT NUMEROUS TIMES! Again, reading comprehension...

Markk wrote:And it is growing...it is everywhere. we never saw this growing up in so cal, even 10- 15 years ago.

You grew up in yucaipa...you didn't see sh$%. Please stop pretending like you have. I lived for years between westchester and torrance and even spent some time in LB - I currently live in OC. All of these places are being completely rebuilt and have been for the last 20 years and are infinitely nicer than they were when I lived in them. My wife grew up on the border of Inglewood, I would say Im a little more familiar with the area than you but, of course, you still believe that you are right and that the things you have seen, never having lived here, Trump my experiences because, reasons and stuff. Much of LA and OC is the same and in the process of being rebuilt to meet housing and employment demands. You have no f-n clue what you are talking about. You grew up in yucaipa...

WTF does that have to do with anything. Again, your personal narratives have nothing to do with what is going on across "SO CA".

Wtf, talk about all over the place, now you are talking about overdoses. Dude, you are really grasping at straws now. So now drug overdoses are indicative of the decline of "SO CA"? Since you don't actually seem to know anything about anyplace outside yucaipa, maybe check out the OD rates of other states and see how we compare to other, more conservative states with less immigration...You really don't know much about anything that is not right in front of you do you? Read a little and at least try to comprehend some of it.

Markk wrote:But you are correct, meth is bad in Southern Baptist county...but Yucaipa is not as bad as other places...but it to is getting worse. But as you can see, at least from OD's, orange is three time worse that Southern Baptist county.

by the way Huntington beach is the city in OC for OD's.

Again, where do you live?

You realize that OC has well over 1 million more people than San Bernardino right? It couldn't be that there is more money, way more people and easier access to prescription drugs and painkillers in wealthy areas or anything. Dude, you really need to gain a basic understanding of stats, you are making yourself look a bit foolish.

I'd write that a little differently but I think I get what you mean. If prices are too high; shop somewhere else. According to the Sacramento Bee between 2005 and 2015, the market exported a net 800,000 poverty level CA residents to other states, and imported a net 20,000$ 100k households. (as an aside, this is more evidence that Mark is wrong, and CA is changing in the opposite direction that he claims)

Moving isn't easy. The link gives an example of a guy who realized prices are on the rise, he's running out of money, and his friends in Texas convinced him to move there. Well, think of everything that has to happen to make that work, it's a market with substantially more friction than the stock market, where you're in and out at the click of a button. Soaring rent prices hit like a hurricane. According to one stat I saw, 289,000 people are(were) already paying 90% of their income in rent, and so it's nearly inevitable at that point.

If I had to guess at a theory, I'd say there is a huge transaction cost because CA is large and it's expensive everywhere, and so out of state is really the only option, and by the time you're living on 10% of your income, it's like staring at the tsunami from the shore. According to one of Mark's articles that he believed until he realized he wasn't reading it correctly, two-thirds of homeless people get back indoors after two months on the street, but I haven't seen a specific stat for LA to compare. It could be that the market is working on it, and just taking some time to clear given rent pressures continue to mount. I mean, 23% growth for last year is pretty bad, but in raw numbers compared to the millions in LA county, it seems like it could be worse. It could be that high transaction costs add significant friction but it's still going to clear. According to your article, the homeless population is mostly locals and not outsiders looking for weather. The implication of that statement is that we're still in market territory and not "public good" territory. It would be interesting if there is some communal aspect of "skid row" that lowers the cost of living there and explains why people stay longer. Anyway, the point is that I don't think you can assume that these people "prefer" to be homeless.

Again all over place...

Where do you live in OC? Why won't you say where you live..

Okay we are getting somewhere....Why don't you live in Inglewood anymore...would you move your family their?

Again by my experience I built a youth center in Inglewood and was there every week day there for a year, during the OJ trial. Has it changed since you wife lived there.

What city do you live in OC again...what did you move there...did schools and quality of life play a part in it.

Torrance and those places are not better than it was....there are areas that are being built up, like the LAX but there are other areas that were really nice middle class neighbors hoods that are crap. There are pockets of really nice places, okay places and crappy places and then the really crappy places. Like Bixby Knolls...nice little historic neighborhood, but surrounded by neighborhoods that I know you would not live in.

I work in these places, shop and do business with people in these place, have family and friends that live in these places, and frequent and have recreation in these places...I understand how things are changing.

Your staw-man that I live in the IE is a joke in that the areas are one big city in all reality, an area code is the only difference. I am a hour or so away, less traffic from any place you just mentioned and again I don't just visit these places I am working there for months or years at a time every day.

What city do you live in?

You know what, you don't seem to be able to address anything anyone is really saying and you don't seem to get beyond the purely anecdotal view of what you choose to see (when you visit where I actually live and work) while spending your life at the ass end of the IE. None of the questions you asked above show that you are capable of understanding or processing the point of this conversation regarding "SO CA", why your views on the decline of "SO CA" are misguided and completely wrong and you still don't understand the difference between anecdote and data.

Im sorry I thought you could grasp some of these basic concepts (including rudimentary economics and statistics) and could actually understand how you are wrong and that maybe your shallow, very biased opinions on the area could be changed based on what is actually going on across southern california. Again, I see that I am wrong and that you are only capable to seeing the very minor exceptions to what is really happening.

So, guess what, according to your non existent experiences with any other cities to compare with and your trivial experiences with LA and OC while living like 2 hours away, you are right, Socal is falling apart and you correct! I get that people like you see it that way and will not be persuaded otherwise. The homeless, libruls, immigrants, drugs and whatever other imagined boogeymen you can concoct are ruining all of "SO CA". Apparently we need people living in Yucaipa to point it out to us. Thank you for your service but me and every single other person that chooses to live here because we love it will continue to ignore your nonsense.

Please feel free to stay out of our area, its a blight and is in rapid decline - I would hate to see you get caught up in it or have things thrown at your truck!! OH, wait, our economic growth is what makes your job possible...lol!

Where do you live Screech...?

Why did you move to OC, why not Inglewood? Would you let your 12 year old kid play at say Woodbridge Park in Irvine ? Would you let him play at a park in Inglewood?
You said you have a office in LA, why move farther away?

You stated 2 block of "skid row"...this article states 54 blocks? This is why I would like to walk it with you...when is the last time you were down there?

You can say I can't read, or comprehend...but I would counter that you are not dealing with reality.

Oh, look, more typing with nothing that would indicate that "SO CA" is in "decline"....More irrelevant questions to the conversation, more not understanding the difference between data and anecdote, more mining for articles (from australia no less) that confirm what you want to believe. Maybe check out the official boundaries of skid row to actually get a sense of where it is, you don't seem to actually have any idea what you are talking about or even understand where the official skid row is or what types of businesses have been popping in in "skid row".

Anyway, feel free to read my previous post if you are tempted to respond with more irrelevant nonsense. This all started because you claimed "SO CA" is falling apart and getting worse and worse but you have provided no data to support that. I get it, in your mind its getting worse and nobody will convince you otherwise, even those of us that live in the areas you tried to ignorantly use as your examples. You believe the church is true "SO CA" is in decline and you will not be convinced otherwise because, "experiences". Got it, in your mind you are right and everyone else is wrong.

You mean the bong shops on 4th and San Pedro? Lets take a walk and you can show me these businesses in Skid Row? It is that simple.

You can't even answer simple questions screech, like why you didn't move to Inglewood? or stay in Torrance...let me guess you moved to Irvine or Mission Vejo... am I close? What schools do your kids go to...Wood Bridge High?

This all started because you claimed "SO CA" is falling apart and getting worse and worse but you have provided no data to support that. I get it, in your mind its getting worse and nobody will convince you otherwise, even those of us that live in the areas you tried to ignorantly use as your examples. You believe the church is true "SO CA" is in decline and you will not be convinced otherwise because, "experiences". Got it, in your mind you are right and everyone else is wrong.

Dude, you have lived in Yucaipa your. entire. life....
