Especially after months (years?) of publicly televised hearings make it painfully obvious to them that the American people are fed up with politicians getting away with crimes unpunished. They will want justice served and the only thing preventing that is a Republican led Senate. That could backfire on Republicans and the Democrats could control Congress within a few years.
Trump is now also stonewalling a whole range of oversight measures by Congress on legally dubious grounds. Impeachment hearings are one of a few tools Congress has to prevent that from working by bringing public pressure to bear. Trump is setting up a choice of impeachment or having a lawless, unaccountable executive and daring Democrats to fight it. If Democrats don’t, I think they will ultimately regret it. The Senate does not have to convict for it to matter. You have to create substantial political risk for the kinds of these Trump has done and is doing.
Even if you think backing down is good electoral politics, which I think is quite dubious, raising your odds of winning by x% is no guarantee of a win. The universe in which Trump has 5.5 more years and a self-cuffed Congress is extremely dark. Democrats want to use “liberal democracy hangs in the balance” feelings to help with winning elections, but it actually does, so maybe acting as if that is the case should produce a less myopically risk adverse outlook.

I guess we should ask Trump is it's ok to invent reasons not to accept the vote.
It was rigged. We still won be Trump played for the electoral college.
But, we won, do we don't have to ask ourselves if would have accepted the vote. I would have for the countries sake, but Hillary was the end of America.

Paranoid fantasies, much?
If this dystopian version of America we're currently suffering is your idea of America (writ large) you're right; Hillary would have ended it before it got started. The funny thing is Clinton would likely have been a disappointment, but only because we'd never have known just how bad it could be. At least Trumpleforeskin gave us that insight.
Your version of Trump sounds almost as accurate as his. Neither of you has a clue.

God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.
