I have a small theory that once a person slaps a political bumper sticker on their car, or flies a political flag, you can rest assured they’re operating outside of normal parameters. I think also goes for wearing political apparel such as t-shirts, hats, and whatever else I’m not thinking about right now. If I had to guess it probably boils down to an effort to exert control over an inherently chaotic world, which is scary - it feels like politics is taking over religion for people, that they believe utopia can be achieved if they just get the right political sect into power. Crazy days.

I think this is true of a lot of people. The modern GOP has morphed into the latest American religion. Trump's base is as much a cult as any other.

A political bumper sticker/T-shirt is a kind of talisman that let's us know someone has emotionally (or even financially) invested in a candidate, the same kind of investment made by people in the religion of their choice. As we've seen with mopologists, once that investment is made, it's impossible for anyone to reason them out of it. People can only shed nonsense if they decide to do it, which entails sacrificing the investment they made.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.

I don't get people's fascination with Trump. The guy is a two-bit fraud. It took the incompetence of the Democratic machine and its support of the worst choice of DNC candidates of the past forty years (Hillary Clinton) for that guy to be elected president of the United States. He was more shocked than anyone, and to this day he is all about making bank on this fluke.
Democratic hubris and echo chambers led to this mess. I think the mainstream media gave so much free advertising coverage to Trump because they thought having him as the GOP nominee was a lock for Hillary Clinton. They thought themselves queenmakers, and ended up being kingmakers. I’m not gonna lie, I thought the same thing about Hillary Clinton and Trump at the time. I drank the Hillary Clinton Kool-aid. I didn’t have strong feelings about her as a candidate until Trump secured the GOP nomination, and only then did I think she was going to win. Maybe election night was when the universe split and we were shunted into an alternate real. Where’s the TVA when you need them? :D

Remember when Trump said he was using his own money to fund his campaign, implying he wouldn't be beholden to moneyed interests?

Remember how many people believed that crap?

That's another symptom in the set known as Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Aaaaah. The Michael Moore moments along the way. There were so, so, so so many.

I think the Democratic superdelegate nonsense was the single biggest issue in the 2016 Election. That was bigger than the emails and the foundation and deplorables and Bubba and all of it. It was bigger than the carpetbagging and the menage-a-trois with Goldman and Jamie Dimon. That BS with the superdelegates was too much, and it cost her a few thousand votes in a half dozen states.

I agree that Trump sold advertising for the media. They wanted to make bank on the campaign, and Trump made them bank. They never dreamed that any Americans could possible refuse a spoonful of their crap, but enough of them did.

There should really be a TDS Awareness month, preferably during the NFL season (obviously, not in October, 'cause that's breast cancer month). People can wear a loud polka dot ribbon and a clown nose to show their support.

Yep.

ETA: Exactly.

The fascination appears to be equally or more intense by critics. But yes, exactly. Oh, one more thing. Hillary would be a metric ton better as president than Biden. I agree with your comment, which identifies her as the worst candidate. That is obviously true then and up to this point. But, she would definitely be a better the President than this guy.
Definitely. Joe is a better candidate because he is more likable than Hillary, but he is far less competent in the job. Both Trump and Biden are not competent, although I would argue that Trump is less competent than Biden because of his inexperience and out of control narcissism, but that is not saying much that is good about Biden. Biden shows you exactly how poorly off the DNC is these days. They can’t possibly agree on anyone who would be good and successful because of the circular firing squad they always form every time an election comes around. There is no way to satisfy everyone in their constituency. Say what you will about conservative Christians, but they have found a way to swallow voting for people like Trump, just as people like Trump are willing to pretend like they care about the rights of the unborn for them. That is at least a more workable and winning combination. I find it terrifying, but one can see why this is such a powerful combination.

The Clinton campaign was crazy arrogant and incompetent. They practically begged to lose. And yes, the superdelegate nonsense is anti-democratic. Here is the party that complains about anti-democratic behavior and policy in the GOP, and they make their own vetting process extremely anti-democratic. It is the party of pearl-clutching elites who don’t want to feel guilty.
