Would you please be kind enough to post the difference?

The difference is that voting practices that are popular among the African-American community are deliberately being targeted.

That would've been explicitly constitutional. Rather, it structured the law in such a way to make blacks disproportionately affected by the measure and lower their turnout as an overall % of the electorate. Are you denying that literacy tests were an effort to suppress black voting?

Whoah.

Just say it, dude.

You do know what Jim Crow laws are, yes? Why would he be referenced if the OP's point isn't that Blacks are being denied the right to vote.

Ms. Beastie,

Are you saying that Black voters can't take 5 seconds to Google? Because that's how long it took me to find this site:

http://ncelectionconnection.com/voting-in-nc/

What is it about that site that's so difficult to understand that would prevent someone from voting?

Black people were statistically more likely to be illiterate at the time of literacy tests and this fact was used to suppress their voting numbers? I like how you won't even condemn one of the most notorious examples of racist voter suppression in American history and try to imply criticism of it itself is racist.

That doesn't address the issue. The practices being targeted are popular among African Americans in particular with the obvious goal of reducing their participation. Whether or not it will reduce their participation remains to be seen. There may be a backlash affect. But regardless of how events unroll in the future, the point is that these decisions were made expressly for the purpose of reducing the African-American vote.

Apparently you don't know what Jim Crow laws are. Name one Jim Crow era law that denied blacks the right to vote outright. Mind you the 15th amendment predates Jim Crow.

While you struggle to name a single example, I'll point out that lawful voter suppression of blacks in the Jim Crow era merely targeted demographic features of blacks to suppress their turnout while not explicitly making their race a criteria of voting. These included things like literacy tests and poll taxes.

Modern voter suppression, which has become an increasing problem, doesn't focus on racial demographics, but primarily on the characteristics of Democratic voting patterns. It just so happens that blacks vote overwhelmingly Democrat and so get caught up in the effort to suppress their vote. Writing laws for the purpose of reducing the voter turnout of disfavored groups that substantially impact racial minorities? Gee, why would anyone compare that to Jim Crow?

So, you're saying Black people are largely illiterate? And that's not racist? I find your position offensive.

I'm going to go ahead and interpret your obstinate misunderstanding words you are reading and unwillingness to disagree with Jim Crow era literacy requirements for voting as you being in favor of Jim Crow era tactics for voter suppression. The voting rights act of 1965 is ultimately what stopped this practice. Would you favor repealing it?

Black people were statistically more likely to be illiterate at the time of literacy tests for voter registration in the old South. While the laws were structured to stack the deck against blacks even further - for example by giving discretion to the registrar how complicated of a passage a person had to read - even if their most benign they were structured to reduce blacks as an overall % of the electorate. Pointing this out isn't racist. And given your posts in this thread, it's no surprise that you appear all in favor of its later generational equivalents.
