The nearly total elimination of severe poverty and improvement of standard of living to the point that once high end luxuries are owned by people in poverty as a matter of course is one of the great success stories of the past 100 years. Even more so globally. I know Fox News et. al. takes this story and manages to turn it into a smug class war argument where the poor got it so good because they own a refrigerator, but it is a very big deal in the overall scheme of things that most people own a refrigerator.
This does conflict with the idea that 200 years ago were better times, but people who say that usually mean it in terms of social values. Like chattel slavery of blacks.

Yes, and this reminds me of something that happened to me last week when I was flipping through youtube comedy clips while driving. I came across George Carlin and he had a segment mocking Baby Boomers pretty much the same way Baby Boomers bash Millennials.
It is pretty funny stuff, but it made me wonder if this is something every generation does or will eventually do. Here it is:

Since when???
And like you give a flying crap about societal foundations. Rural america is mostly Republican for a reason. They're anti-socialites who cower behind their guns and their religion and they hate interacting with society at large. The only time Republicans care about societal rituals is in the context of nationalism, which is good for no one. Forcing people to stand to worship a flag is beyond stupid.

Generational bashing is a song as old as time. The best part is that the complaints don't actually change.Kevin Graham wrote:Yes, and this reminds me of something that happened to me last week when I was flipping through youtube comedy clips while driving. That much is understood, but a normal advancement of the average state of technology and the penetration of devices as a result of it into virtually every corner of the public sphere isn’t an effective part of an argument that a person cannot be ‘poor’ simply by virtue of owning such things, especially given that I can find a good used refrigerator on Craigslist on any given day for $200. That will be a one-time expense for what could be many years.
As tactics go, it’s a bizarrely dismissive claim designed to invoke contempt from a segment of the population most likely able to benefit from this advancement of ever-cheaper technology ... and likely watching that Fox commentary on their inexpensive flat-screen television, as example.

Very true. My Mom still talks about how the greatest thing she experienced as a child was when her parents bought a house with a toilet. They used an "out house" during her early years.
I also remember during the early 80's we bought our first Microwave oven and we thought we were the coolest, richest family on the planet. We ate homemade nachos every night for two weeks because we loved watching the cheese melt. Nowadays microwaves are dime a dozen and no one pays any attention to how cool they really are.
I remember my 6th grade science teacher had a geiger counter and he'd run it over my belly in the morning and it would detect the radiation from the eggs I had microwaved for breakfast.

That wasn’t the eggs. He was picking up the miniturized, nuclear-powered secret government monitoring implant placed in all children by covert operatives when their umbilical cords are severed during childbirth.
Pretty sure I heard that on Alex Jones or somesuch. : D

Did you just praise capitalism? There has to be a catch somewhere that I'm missing.

I'm a libertarian Water Dog. Don't confuse my dislike of authoritarianism and nonstop stupidity / dishonesty with anything else.

That's not how a microwave or geiger counter works.
