I didn't hear a PEEP about it from the open-minded, tolerant, and diverse types on this board.

Doc, this happened in 2007 and the video surfaced in 2010. There might not be too many MD folks still posting today from that time.

Oh, believe you me, the ones who I'm talking about have been here since forever. Whatever the case may be, this incessant need to link Trump to everything bad, a sort of 6 degrees of crazy, is reeeeeally reaching and misguided. I'm sure the point I made by linking the video was missed by the very people who need to reflect a little.

How do you know it was missed? I know I commented on it on more than one occasion. Again, I'm fairly certain I started a thread about it, yet you insist it was missed. To the broader issue you are vaguely alluding to, I found I thread where I complain extensively about the Obama admin's treatment of journalists that you were in:

(As a bonus, the very last sentence in that thread written by me turned out to be unfortunately prescient.)

The real problem here is you are unable to place Trump in proper context relative to abuses of predecessors.

And what "proper context" would that be?

Take what you will from this post about DCP, and try a little introspection, if that's even possible:

Because you need to be seen as the top pinnacle of knowing everything about everything yourself. You have to present the impression that nothing escapes your notice, that you read everything in every topic, in short, that you attempt to imitate the image of Hugh Nibley, who gave everyone everywhere the impression that if it's printed, I know about it, and know about it better than you do. That's my suspicion at least. It's all about image, the humble uber-intelligent person, well read, traveled, and knowledgable in all things, and he still believes in Mormonism, so it must be true. If smart people believe that silly fluff, then it is because it is true, because smart people are always more correct than all the rest of us ignorant "immature" thinking folk.

And what "proper context" would that be?

BUMP for EA to distinguish between Obama's surveillance and prosecutuon of the press and Trump's tweets being so gosh darn mean.

apologies: edited for the hope of being edified by the fountainhead with the yet to be realized "context".

Well. How many things that Trump castigated Obama and Clinton for is he going to do?

- "The US is a laughing stock because of Obama".

The UN literally laughs at Trump.

- "Obama bows to the Saudis"

Trump allows them to literally dismember a US resident.

- Called Obama the "habitual vacationer" and said he "wouldn't have time to play golf"

Already spent more time golfing in <2 years than Obama in 8.

- Trump said "Obama treated enemies with “tender love and care” and “picked fights with our oldest friends.”

Meanwhile Trump alienates Europe Canada and Mexico while cozying up to Putin and Un.

- Trump criticized Obama with: "Why is @BarackObama constantly issuing executive orders that are major power grabs of authority?”

But now executive order's are his favorite thing.

I could go on. I'd suggest you just google "Trump hypocrisy", but your computer might explode. One might say the press treated Obama better than it does Trump, I mean even Bill Clinton said the press did it because Obama was black, but you have to admit Trump gives the press a huge target, rightfully so.

Riiiight .... because it's just the right time for the President to make jokes about beating up reporters.

I mean, let's lighten up, hey?

Trump was 'playful' in praising assault on Guardian reporter, Ben Sasse says

Donald Trump was being “playful” when he praised a Montana congressman who assaulted a Guardian reporter, said a Republican senator whose new book sets out to “heal” America’s glaring political divide.

In Missoula, Montana on Thursday, Trump discussed Greg Gianforte’s attack on Ben Jacobs, which happened in May 2017 when Jacobs asked the then candidate a question about healthcare. To laughter, the president mimed a “body slam” and said Gianforte was “my guy”. The attack broke Jacobs’ glasses and injured his elbow.

On Sunday, Ben Sasse of Nebraska appeared on CNN’s State of the Union.

“I got to admit I don’t follow the rallies,” said the senator, a conservative critic of Trump with rumoured White House ambitions who nonetheless usually votes with the president. “But I think the first amendment is the beating heart of the American experiment. So we need to have a president who celebrates the first amendment and not pretends that beating up a reporter is OK.

“But I think what you hear from a lot of Nebraskans who also tune out the rallies, is there’s sort of a short-term, long-term thing going on and people feel like the president’s rhetoric is short-term playful. They don’t think it’s OK but I think people kind of tune most of it out.”

In a week dominated by the death of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of the Saudi regime, Sasse was promoting his new book, Them: Why We Hate Each Other – and How to Heal. In response to host Jake Tapper’s suggestion that “it’s not playful to joke about assault”, he said: “No. The guy was convicted of a crime.”

Gianforte pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to four days in jail as a misdemeanor, later changed to 40 hours of community service, a fine and a compulsory anger-management course. He wrote a letter of apology to Jacobs, as part of a civil settlement under which Gianforte also gave $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The congressman has however consistently tried to avoid the subject. In the immediate aftermath of the assault, his campaign lied about it to police, trying to cast Jacobs as the aggressor. Gianforte has never explained this conduct and did not admit to full responsibility for the attack until a civil settlement was reached. He also reneged on a courtroom promise of an interview with Jacobs.

In an interview with the Billings Gazette published on Sunday, Gianforte claimed: “I personally regret what happened. I’ve taken full responsibility. I’m not perfect. I’ll be the first one to say that. It’s been covered extensively and I’ve moved on, and honestly, Ben Jacobs said he wanted to move on, too.”

In 2017, when it became clear Gianforte would not fulfill his promise of an interview, which was made before his sentencing, Jacobs said in a statement: “I forgave congressman Gianforte for his unprovoked attack and his slanderous statement afterwards in hope that this behavior was an aberration. Instead, I have become increasing convinced that those actions were a display of his true character.

“In refusing to do the promised on-the-record interview with me, congressman Gianforte continues his pattern of avoiding responsibility for his actions and refusing to live up to the statements made in what I thought was a sincere apology.”

Speaking to CNN on Friday, Jacobs said he experienced “shock and dismay” when Trump discussed his case in Missoula, which left him wondering “how you call up and tell your family that the president is mocking you when you’ve been a victim of a crime”.

On Sunday, Sasse persisted in eulogising first amendment rights and insisted it was “not OK” for a president in charge of “stewarding” them to act as Trump did.

But he said: “But I do think it’s sort of baked into the president’s stock price, sort of this amoralistic take he has on it, it’s just what people think the president’s going to do and most people where I live sort of ignore most of it.

“Some think it’s funny, some are really anxious about it but most think, ‘Well, that’s just how the president talks.’ We need to do better than that but I also think there’s a danger in pretending each new rally is immediately urgent. I wish he did it differently, obviously.”

Trump's remarks attracted international criticism, from governments and from press and writers’ groups. In a statement, the Guardian editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner, decried what she said were “incredibly irresponsible comments, which fly in the face of press freedom and send a dangerous message to autocrats and dictators around the world”.

She added: “The world’s press would welcome a clear statement from the US government that it remains committed to the rights of journalists everywhere to do their work without fear of violence or repression.”

Yeah, because your hyperbole is so much like Obama's surveillance and prosecution of reporters for actual reporting.
