Re: Bird Watching While Black
There's a slightly different universe where this woman hires a conservative PR firm and they use their connections with right-wing media to build a counter-narrative that turns this into a culture war. I don't know exactly what that'd look like - I'm not a conservative PR firm - but my guess is they'd comb over the cameraman's history to see if there's anything to smear him with. Maybe he has a marijuana charge in his past. Then maybe they'd argue that the video didn't capture the early exchange, which is true, where the man might've been a jerk, which also seems potentially true. Maybe they'd try to parlay that into arguing she was genuinely frightened and the media misrepresented her seemingly affected state as racism. Then maybe they'd go after liberal misogynistic hypocrisy for not appreciating the danger women alone can face in the park. Etc. Etc.
Before you know it, conservative America is in an outrage and middle-brow journalists are apologizing for jumping the gun and retreating into a "both sides" story. Once that happens, it's likely then most of white America will take her side, and perhaps the man would be vilified in the end. If you try to argue that none of this would excuse calling the cops in a fright, pretended or not, to unleash the threat of racially biased policing on a minority, you would be attacked for being an unreasonable radical for not appreciating the above.
But she didn't hire a conservative PR firm and now there's hell to pay. Her biography makes it seem like she had the money. She probably should've done that.

I feel compelled to remind everyone that according to his own account, he made this statement before the brouhaha started where the woman is seen swinging her dog around like a birthday pinata while telling the cops via phone that an African American male was threatening both her and her dog.
ME: Look, if you're going to do what you want, I'm going to do what I want, but you're not going to like it.
Not because I support her behavior but for the sake of accuracy.

Here's Christian Cooper discussing the incident himself on the View.
