I said I didn't vote for a convicted rapist and a Trump supporter quickly corrected me "No! he wasn't convicted of rape!" No, he was 'just' found liable for "sexually abusing and defaming" a woman. As though that is so much better than saying 'convicted rapist'.
This is the kind of excuse that makes it impossible not to think Trump voters are stupid.
First of all, to your point, the difference between sexual assault and full on rape (which, let's face it, is probably what happened) is inconsequential when you're trying to determine if a person should lead the free world.
But more importantly, it shows the lengths people will go to delude themselves and rationalize their idiotic vote.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense.
If you take offense to being called stupid, it's because deep down you believe it. Anyone who voted for Trump because they didn't like being called stupid (or for any other reason) proved they were stupid. You can't change that perception if you continue to do stupid things.
Trump voters will vote for him the rest of their lives, because they are stupid. There's no point avoiding it. You have to explain their vote somehow.
Considering that you're talking about 72,978,296 American citizens, you probably should question it. Given this fairly large number of people, do you think there might be at least a few dozen people, out of the 93 million people, that aren't stupid?
I can agree with the idea that not every Trump voter is stupid. Lots of very smart people make choices that you and I won’t agree with; a voting choice could be indicative of stupidity, but is in no way a guarantee of stupidity.
I’m much more curious about the moral aspect. I think that - given a choice - it’s very hard to morally rationalize voting for a convicted fraudster/sexual offender/adulturer/convicted con man/compulsive liar/thief/grifter/divider to the highest office in the land, while rejecting his opponent for allowing some number more of immigrants to seek refuge in the country, or for managing a worldwide inflation surge better than virtually every other industrialized nation.
That said, there are many paths to being morally dysfunctional. Voting for Trump is just one of them.
There is nothing rational or encouraging about the fact that we Americans have voted back into the Whitehouse a convicted felon, a rapist, a known pathological liar, an adulterer who cheated on all three of his wives, a racial and religious bigot, who admires undoubtedly cruel dictators such as Putin, Xi, Kim Jong Un and Vicor Orban, etc., and who instigated an insurrection to overturn a lawful and free election.
Have you noticed nobody has ever defended their vote in light of this? They just gloss over it, ignore it, or handwave it away with Well I don't really like him either... As though that were an adequate defense for saddling the rest of the country with this damned incompetent, rapist, lying asshole.
Of course all 70+ million Trump voters are damned stupid. Voting for Trump is the clearest indicator you are incurably stupid.

And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.
So, a person can have a high IQ and do dumb crap. Clever and prudent are not the same thing. I don’t think voting for Trump could ever be considered a prudent move for positive long term outcomes.
"I have learned with what evils tyranny infects a state. For it frustrates all the virtues, robs freedom of its lofty mood, and opens a school of fawning and terror, inasmuch as it leaves matters not to the wisdom of the laws, but to the angry whim of those who are in authority.”

Every time I've said Trump voters are stupid, in the back of my mind, I'm thinking What you really mean is that they made an incredibly stupid choice, but this week, I don't care enough to make that distinction. Maybe some day.

I'm just as peeved about this as you are Schmo. My scorn level for the stupid is just a bit lower then yours though since most people have no control over how many neural connections they are born with.
My scorn level for the uneducated, average IQ MAGA person is substantially higher. Haven't decided yet on what my level of scorn should be for myself at 25 and still under the influence of Mormon indoctrination.

I hear what you're saying. People are what they were born with.
So where I land on that is that, I have to accept that millions of people are outrageously stupid, and that's bad for someone who has been saying for years, we are all at the the mercy of the lowest common denominator. In this instance, it means we have to put up with incompetent damned thinkers who imagined Trump was a good idea.
For some reason, knowing the truth about people doesn't help manage the pain of knowing they exist.

I'm just going to say, because this subject bugs me so much: this idea that Democrats need to do some sole searching is damned dumbass BS. People who say that are not accounting for the right-wing media BS machine. The fact that Democrats aren't willing to lie shamelessly to get votes is not a knock against the democratic party. It's a knock against the damned retarded voters who believe idiot nonsense, and have succumb to the idiots who people regard as "thought leaders" on the right.
Democrats don't need to do soul searching (unless they're considering the same kind of idiot demagoguery the GOP loves these days). Idiot voters do.
“F” I hate people right now.
