Trump yanks millions from Catholic charity amid Pope Leo feud

The Trump administration has canceled an $11 million federal contract with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami, ending a program that has sheltered and cared for unaccompanied migrant children for more than six decades. The move comes as President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, are locked in an escalating public feud over immigration and the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski wrote in an op-ed for the Miami Herald that without the $11 million contract, services may not last the rest of the year.

In his statement, Wenski said, “The U.S. government has abruptly decided to end more than 60 years of relationship with Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Miami. The Archdiocese of Miami’s services for unaccompanied minors have been recognized for their excellence and have served as a model for other agencies throughout the country. Our track record in serving this vulnerable population is unmatched. Yet, the Archdiocese of Miami’s Catholic Charities services for unaccompanied minors have been stripped of funding and will be forced to shut down within three months.”
