There was a popular blog that eventually was turned into a somewhat less popular book called Stuff White People Like. It's uneven at the end, but generally quite funny. Everything on the list is a satiric commentary on the tastes and attitudes of a particular liberal, affluent crowd that is predominantly white. The meta-joke of the list is that this subculture can be taken to represent white people as a whole, which itself a parody of similar comments on black people.

But aside from that, I would agree that progressives also are trying to force their values onto others. That's pretty much what government in general is about.

If liberals have values they sure seem one sided to me. What if it were three white boys beating a black boy senseless on a school bus in Florida? I doubt Al Sharpton would have remained silent. I bet Beastie would be a lot more interested in discussing it than she is when the tables are turned this way.

I think my original point was a little muddled, which didn't help the topic. Not that it would've mattered. I think some of the posters here are so mired in their groupthink they can't fathom demographic groups are fundamentally different than them, and to address those issues in order to promote understanding is "racist" or "bigoted".

I don't get it. I don't see a problem with looking at an issue honestly, and then working toward an agreeable understanding.

This leads to an interesting question, though. Do you need to live among a demographic in order to understand the demographic? Or, can you simply observe a demographic in order to understand a demographic?

For example, I've never lived among rabid Christian fundamentalists, but I can observe them on this board (and others). Do I feel like I understand them? I do. But, I have to wonder if I have a false sense of understanding based off my interactions with them on the Internet...

That was a horrible, vicious crime. The perpetrators were immediately arrested and charged.

Why do I have to defend a position I haven't taken?

You, on the other hand, have created this entire thread on the premise that liberals simply don't recognize reality, which is that black culture is so different in terms of what is right or important. So I think it's fair to ask you to further define that position.
