I sometimes ask myself the same question after ldsfaqs, xanax, or the jenius posts. Yes. This is real.

65% of people have an IQ between 85 and 115, so we're mostly in agreement that Trump is neither exceptionally smart or dumb. I dunno...maybe you guys are right, maybe Trump is below average intelligence. Perhaps I give his narcissism too much credit for his apparent stupidity. Let me put it this way: If Trump were NOT a screaming narcissist, throughout his life he would have listened and learned more. A lot more. And a lifetime of not using critical thinking has left him with an atrophied capacity for learning and expansion. So it might be fair to say that his narcissism has actually made him stupider.

Narcissism is one of the most difficult dysfunctions to treat, no doubt because narcissists are too smart to be treated. ;-)

Yes, this is pretty much what I think too.

I think I may have said this the last time we talked about it, but I don't think it's right to think of a person's intelligence as a static thing. Like I said, I've taken an IQ test a few times, and although the scores were somewhat tightly grouped, they weren't all the same. We all have smarter and dumber days, and part of that equation are the things that make us perform below our potential (like narcissism, which I completely agree makes him do far dumber things than he might otherwise).

So if you're saying he has the potential to act smarter without the narcissism, no argument here.

It also seems to me that we're kind of talking about two different things in this thread. IQ is being used both as a substitute for the word "intelligence" in certain contexts and as an actual score (the quotient itself) in others. I meant it when I said that if he took the test, I'd be surprised if he cracked 85. In reality, I think he acts dumber than that. I suspect he impresses a lot of people because he has a way with gullible, angry people. I chalk that up to him being a gullible angry person, and certainly not because he's a brilliant orator.

It's hard to learn when you're every waking moment is spent trying to exercise power over other people or draw attention to or elevate yourself, in order to get your "hit". Narcissism is about mind games the narcissist plays with themselves and others. It's not about knowledge unless you count the knowledge of what produces the "hit" of supply that you need and weeding out the people you can/cannot manipulate to that end.

That's one of the saddest things I've seen and I am sure the writer is not alone in his misery and confusion. I do know that if I were to encounter a person like that face to face, they would have a willing and compassionate "ear" in me.

"I gave up my whole family for this man."

The difference between someone like this, who evidently represents the level of total devotion and commitment inspired in some Trump voters, is what makes it impossible to deal with the present crisis of US politics and society by a simple 'Let's all try to get along and speak respectfully to one another' policy - though that has its place, and can do no harm.

This is a religious depth of commitment, and needs to be handled as such. Remember Luke 14?
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, 26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
This kind of thing is not to be resolved by merely having a nice chat and agreeing to differ. People will need to de-program themselves, and rebuild their lives. In the last days of WWII in Germany, numbers of people killed themselves, not because they were afraid of answering for Nazi crimes, but because they simply could not bear the idea of living in a Germany without Hitler and without the vision of the world on which they had built their lives for years:

Promise Me You'll Shoot Yourself: The Downfall of Ordinary Germans, 1945
One of the last untold stories of the Third Reich is that of the extraordinary wave of suicides, carried out not just by much of the Nazi leadership, but by thousands of ordinary Germans, in the war's closing period. Some of these were provoked by straightforward terror in the face of advancing Soviet troops or by personal guilt, but many could not be explained in such relatively straightforward terms.

Florian Huber's remarkable book, a bestseller in Germany, confronts this terrible phenomenon. Other countries have suffered defeat, but not responded in the same way. What drove whole families, who in many cases had already withstood years of deprivation, aerial bombing and deaths in battle, to do this?

In a brilliantly written, thoughtful and original work, Huber sees the entire project of the Third Reich as a sequence of almost overwhelming emotions and scenes for many Germans. He describes some of the key events which shaped the period from the First World War to the end of the Second, showing how the sheer intensity, allure and ferocity of Hitler's regime swept along millions. Its sudden end was, for many of them, simply impossible to absorb.
