Re: Happy Treason Weasel Day!!
I don't think the LDS church approach of denying 'that we ever said that' helps matters either. Yesterday I said, in the presence of an acquaintance who is a staunch, long-time Trump supporter, 'its hard to imagine people continuing to support him after he incited violence.'
They jumped into the conversation and literally said, with a voice full of indignation, "whoever said I "supported" Trump?"
These conversations have left me reeling.

Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense.

“ U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski said Friday that Donald Trump should resign the presidency immediately and that if the Republican Party cannot separate itself from Trump, she isn’t certain she has a future with the party.
“I want him to resign. I want him out. He has caused enough damage,” Murkowski, R-Alaska, said during an interview from her small Capitol office, steps away from the Senate chambers that were invaded by pro-Trump rioters on Wednesday.”

Or worse, excuse it with a lie. I read online that people are arguing that the woman who died was shot "when she was just trying to take a picture."Chap wrote: [While some of these people are, admittedly, ill-educated and ill-informed, there is no way that they did not know that what they were doing was against the law. If they are not prosecuted on the grounds of their wilfully ignorant and deluded state, that will open a lot of doors through which some really horrible, evil and malevolent people will march in, grinning all over their faces. This is not a time to deal softly with people who boasted of their use of violence and the threat of violence, and now want to whimper about 'Poor little me - I just didn't know any better'.
If that's true, is the argument that: when one is trespassing in a federal building where lawmakers have been evacuated and are in hiding, and one comes across a set of heavy doors barricaded with stacks of furniture, heavy glass shattered, behind which multiple secret service all have their guns drawn and are yelling at you to stand down, plus the police behind you are in full riot gear, with mace and pepper spray in use and weapons drawn, also yelling at you to stand down, that one needs to be told:
"DON'T CLIMB THROUGH THE BROKEN WINDOW---NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR A SELFIE" ????
"Dealing softly" with stuff like that is a mistake, I agree.

Not to pick on my poor 'staunch supporter' acquaintance, but when the story about the woman shot was brought up, her argument was that 'the Capitol had already been breached, and she was already inside. There was no reason to shoot her.'
I can't even.

I guess now might be a good time to say this here, though I wasn't originally planning to. We here at the homestead have not discussed Trump in well over a year or more likely 2 years, it's hard to recall how long it's been. Maybe in passing, but no lengthy conversations, because it was never going to go well and I am of the mind that everyone has a right to their own personally held perspectives. I did voice a couple of times where I credited Trump with something positive (EX: Operation Warp Speed) but other than that, we've been on polar opposite sides with regard to the Trump administration.Lem wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:07 pmI don't think the LDS church approach of denying 'that we ever said that' helps matters either. Not any more.
The night of the Capitol building breach, JB went online and for a variety of somewhat complicated reasons, he withdrew his affiliation with the Republican Party and went "unaffiliated". If ever there were a ride or die, it was him.
And yet, there it is.

If there were ever a more appropriate metaphor I’d be hard pressed to find one.

Here’s a clip that gives a different perspective on what the insurrection was like. https://youtu.be/cJOgGsC0G9U It’s 30 minutes long. I recommend watching it all.
