Re: The coronavirus spread updated in real time
One of the major sources of transmission in Iran and South Korea was religious practices. I read this morning about a church in DC that was still administering communion by placing wagers directly in the mouth of parishioners. That odd beyond insane. You might well be kidding shrines in Qom.
It made me wonder about sacrament passing in LDS churches. In my day, teenagers broke pieces of bread in small pieces and then filled trays of paper or plastic cups with water. They were supposed to wash their hands, but would be touching all kinds of surfaces. Then the trays would be passed down rows of members, with each person touching the handle of the tray and taking a piece of the bread or a cup of water.
Is it still done this way? If so, it’s a freeway for SARS-CoV-2 to move from person to person. It will, without a doubt, kill elderly or high risk people in your ward. Maybe a friend. Maybe your mother.
Here’s a lesson from Seattle. If you wait to start social distancing until directed by a government agency or until your gut tells you that you should really start, you’ve waited too long. Start making plans and implementing social distancing today. Make a plan with your family today. Don’t go visit grandma in the nursery home, even if you don’t think you’re sick. And stop going to places where 50 or more gather — 10 if a case has been confirmed in your country. That includes church. I think any merciful God will forgive you from taking a break to help keep the most vulnerable among us from misery and unnecessary death. For our LDS friends, can you stay home and administer the sacrament at home? If you don’t have a priesthood holder in your home, will a a member of your ward come to your home to administer the sacrament? Top leaders of every organization are slow to react to this crisis. It’s human nature. You can’t rely on institutions to keep you safe. You have to take steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and the vulnerable folks in your ward our congregation.
Seattle hospitals are already rationing and running out of the protective equipment they need. They are already compromising their safety to care for the critically ill COVID19 patients. Many of them will become infected and some of them will die. I tweeted with RN last night, and they are very scared. Please, do whatever you can to help them stay healthy. If you bought R95 masks, or come across one at your local hardware store, donate it to your local hospital. If they don’t need them now, they will soon. Every country in the world is scrambling to lay their hands on the same scarce resources.
I’m not saying to lock yourself in your house. I’m posting this from my favorite local game pub, drinking an awesome bourbon barreled Belgian quad. But, the first thing I did when I got here was wash my damn hands. They supply gloves, which everyone is wearing. Each table has Notice about wearing gloves and washing hands. Each table is limited to two people, and are separated by at least six feet. I am perfectly comfortable with being here. They have taken necessary steps to keep their gaming community safe. And they still need customers to keep them afloat for the next few months. One of the owner’s wife is high risk, and they are home quarantining for the foreseeable future. I’ve connected with local libertarians who are organizing folks to support people who need to self quarantine, as well as local health care providers. Disaster training is this coming week (through teleconfetence of course. Start organizing your ward, Parrish, congregation, or neighborhood now.
Be proactive, be smart, be healthy.

I really appreciate these posts you are making. You gave me an idea about wearing gloves. I have a box of vinyl gloves and will be wearing them (without apology) when I need to go shopping. Gloves make more sense as a universal precaution than masks do in this case.
I think you get the idea that I am forced by weather to social distance this time of year so I am no stranger to it. If I don't prepare for it, I start losing my good attitude in February because I know I've got about 4 months left to go and feel like a caged animal. So I'd just like to offer a few of the ways I prepare beyond the common "stash".
I plan ways to make the best use of those months and have something to show for it at the end. Example, home projects, planning the garden, pile of books, supplies for creative stuff I do, ways to exercise at home, and I take classes.
I'm starting a class online this coming week about the Book of Kells. I am sure I'll now pop in another class to fill the gap between this and my Forensics Psychology that is scheduled for July. The classes are relatively lightweight and they provide time dedicated to growth.
I was going to start painting rooms in the house in summer but now I think I'll slip that up and do my painting while socially distancing myself. One trip to Lowes for a couple of buckets of paint and that should keep me busy for a bit.
For exercise at home I'm going to use all the Youtube videos for Dancing Behind Bars (Filipino prisoners doing choreographed dance routines) and learn the dances at home. They're pretty awesome! :-)

Re: The coronavirus spread updated in real time
I keep following the OP map like it's my job now. The number of US cases increased by 100+ overnight. I needed something to obsess over. Thanks, Shades!
Of personal interest to me and mine. And, I'm sure that each one of us has a story to tell in much the same way.
El Paso County, CO: One case. Holding our own for the time being but that will change. Of great concern to me now that we have a brand spanking new children's hospital in the area, all other hospitals now refer all peds cases there. This summer it was full to capacity. I hope they'll adjust the new system as needed.
Hudson County, New Jersey: One case now. I have a relative there who works in a grocery store, who cannot afford to take time off work from dealing with a steady flow of customers each day--who also has COPD.
Lee County, Florida: Two cases, one still active, one death. That's the exact area I was to visit. I am sure the one death has to do with the large population of retirees in the area and in Florida in general. Trip canceled; not going. Not willing to put myself in a position where I'm breathing cabin air for 4 hours and basically asking for it.
So those are just a few stories from the Jersey tribe and like I said, I am sure everyone else has a story of personal impact from their own neck of the woods.
Speaking of neck of the woods, I'm so glad to that I live out in the sticks and away from people right now. It has it's downside but it may prove beneficial given the current state of affairs.
Keep your cup half full, people. Follow the practices that RI has suggested and plan for your social distancing time.

An advantage we have now is the internet. We can pay our bills online. We can even order from the supermarket our weekly groceries.(Toilet paper might be a problem). Many people can work from home. When I was working in a government department a number of staff were able to do that. The most vulnerable people are folks like me over 60. I am also an introvert and love being home. Plenty of books to read or reread.

Introverts have this social distancing deal whipped. It's not that we're shy. We just don't want you sucking out our energy. That's why we post on boards. We can shut you off.

A couple of things which Trump said or did worry me. When he was talking about the kit he said everything will be perfect just like his phone call. Another report of concern was his removal from a CDC notification that thos most affected will be the over 60s. Now I read that a significant amount of his support coomes from that demographic. The 10 poorest states in the US are red states and they also have high obesity and diabetes rates. Would Trump ever contemplate not holding rallies.?

In Italy, masses have been cancelled. The Pope will be broadcasting from the Vatican.
So, you have Trump saying 'no worries' and Italy's shutting down the churches. I'll be curious to see the reaction of the Mega-Churches in the United States. Will they listen to 'God's Imperfect Instrument' or science?

Can you imagine what Mormon wards will be like once this thing gets around? Y’all ex-Mo’s remember that dank diaper and Cheerios smell? So much grossness. Hopefully the Prophet has some guidance on the issue!
