More reports coming out on Matt Lauer. I can't post them here. Here's a link to one I just read.

Matt Lauer's going to need his own thread. Here's his remark to Meredith Vieira.

Re: Tidal wave of sexual assault-misconduct allegations list
I'm kind of repeating myself here, but I just can't think of any comparable moment in American history, where an acknowledged dirty little secret got flipped so rapidly. I'm still shocked at the depth and breath of the problem. I think it's great that all this his happening. Not the sweetest metaphor, but if feels like we lanced a boil. All this gross stuff is coming out but the result will be a healthier society.
It seems like the time between an accusation being made, investigated, evaluated and acted up has gone from decades to literally one or two days. I don't know if any incorrect accusations, but the turnaround between accusation and firing does not give much time for a defense. Far be it from me to accuse women of a kangaroo court when men have been getting away with sh*t for millennia. But I do have concerns that a man's story should be heard. And obviously (assuming most normal situations) I put the testimony of multiple women above the testimony of a single man, but again, this is an opportunity for everyone to be heard.
We're going to be dealing with a lot of these events over the next few years, given the prevalent nature the problem, and the fact that women are increasingly feeling empowered to speak up. Personally, I think of this almost like truth and reconciliation processes. When a massive social injustice has occurred for long periods time, it becomes normalized. When I was a teenager I had breakfast at my girlfriend's house on Sundays. The men would watch football, and the women would make breakfast and do the dishes.
Now sexual harassment is a greater sin that not doing the dishes, but they both were types of behavior that, while not looked at as being exemplary, were a general part of 'the way things were'. Some men testing their social dominance. For some it became a pattern, and a pattern of harassment should probably end in termination (from your job!) but if someone tested the limits of their behavior once or twice at a time when it was not considered that unusual...I just think that zero tolerance is another way of say intolerant. In life it is far better to rehabilitate a person than to throw them away. There should consequences to your actions, but again, the idea is to come out on the other side with a society where some people's behavior was correctable.

I certainly agree with you that it is good thing this boil is finally being exposed and lanced. I also share your concerns about the probability of at least some unjust and bogus allegations in this tidal wave we are now witnessing. It would be remarkable indeed if none of them turn out to be bogus.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I agree with you here that chances are that some of the accusations are bogus. I think the same exact way about the Cosby allegations.
Even so, I think that the majority are valid and true. I'm not all that surprised by the sheer volume of allegations against multiple men in power. I know of many situations in real life where men who held positions of far less power, exercised their power to manipulate women in such ways. It only makes sense that those who enjoy celebrity status might be even more bold in their manipulations.
I hope that these high visibility cases will empower victims in "every day life" to come forward and report their abuses as well.
I do think this is the wake up call that this country has needed for decades and will serve to foster positive change in the work place to protect folks from sexual misconduct and also from false allegations.
Our systems need to change. The very practices that I identified and suggested on a previous thread (that some here scoffed at) are being discussed in the public forum right now.
As well they should be.

We have female teachers sexually harassing male students (if that's possible). Now we have bull queers being accused of sexual harassment. The only thing left to complete the circle is lesbian sexual harassment.

It is not an issue of sex per say. It is an issue of power. Which happens even in lesbian relationships.

Matt Lauer wants a 30 million dollar pay out.
(I probably shouldn't comment further on that.)
