CNN fact-checker bashes Trump claims about DC crime and murder-free streak: ‘Not even close to true’

A CNN fact-checker shredded a deluge of Donald Trump’s false claims about crime in Washington, D.C.

During Trump’s second Oval Office press conference of the day on Monday, the president defended his deployment of the National Guard and takeover of the police force in the nation’s capital, touting an 11-day murder-free period.

Despite polling showing how unpopular Trump’s moves are in D.C., the president continued to claim that, under his watch, the city has transformed from “the most dangerous place in the world” to the “safest place” in under two weeks.

Towards the end of Trump’s White House meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday, CNN News Central brought in senior reporter Daniel Dale to fact-check the U.S. commander-in-chief’s claims.

Asked whether Trump’s claim about D.C.’s first murder-free week in “many years,” Dale responded that “it is not accurate,” citing other similar stretches this year in the district.

“There has currently been the 11-day stretch without a reported homicide, but that also happened earlier this year,” he said. In February and March, there was a 16-day stretch with no reported homicides in the district. So the president is exaggerating again.”

Dale also pointed to another claim that was “not even close to true”: that the capital’s crime was at an all-time high when he took office.

While D.C.’s murder rate two years ago hit levels not seen since the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s, the period since has seen a steep decline under the leadership of Chief Pamela Smith, who was named to her role in 2023.

Statistics made public by the D.C. government and the Department of Justice show that other violent crimes have also declined during the same period.

Crime figures from the Metropolitan Police Department for the District of Columbia state that violent offenses fell last year to their lowest level in 30 years and have continued to decline in 2025, according to preliminary data for the first half of the year.

Dale also dug into Trump’s pledge to deploy National Guard troops into Republican strongholds, before adding, “but there aren’t that many of them.”

“If you look at the top 25 cities for crime, just about every one of those cities is run by Democrats,” Trump told reporters.

Dale quickly shut down Trump’s claims, arguing that “many” Republican-led cities face high crime rates.

“There are indeed a bunch of cities in red states that are high on national crime rate lists, however you slice the data,” Dale said. “Just looking at the facts, cities like Memphis, Tennessee; Cleveland, Ohio; Kansas City, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri; Houston, Texas, all among the 10 or 15 cities with the highest violent crime rates, all in red states with Republican governors.”

“So, who’s to blame for that?,” he asked.

Out of pure curiosity, I went looking through DC's open data portal, limiting the date range from the time Trump mobilized the National Guard in DC until today's date (8/26/25).

During that time, there have been 2 murders (one the first day of deployment, and one this morning -- both involving guns), 4 rapes, 27 burglaries, 33 assaults with a deadly weapon (most of which involved a gun), 26 robberies, 329 vehicles stolen, and 501 other kinds of reported theft.

I wonder how much full coverage costs on a car in DC, with the vehicle theft rate? If that's how many cars are stolen with a crap-ton of federal agents and national guard troops parading about (23+ every single day), I can only imagine what it is normally. I actually had to get rid of one of my cars last year because the theft rate was so high for that make/model that insurance was more than a car payment -- I tried shopping coverage, and several companies wouldn't even cover it. Hopefully DC has good public transit. Yikes.

It is glaringly obvious what Trump is trying to pull here. He knows that crime rates in DC had already been declining for years this year and was already at a 59-year low, just before was elected, that could not have been due to anything he had done, since he had been out of office for 4 years. Nevertheless, he decided to take advantage of the lowered crime rate and falsely claim that it was entirely due to what he did in the last few days. One could just as easily (and perhaps more credibly) have claimed that the temporary absence of Trump's corrupt influence in the Presidency or the influence of the Biden Administration was the real reason for the decline in DC crime rates during the 4 years of Biden's administration.

It is far from the first time Trump claimed credit for something he had nothing to do with.

This grandma is setting the members of the religion of progressivism straight by praising Trump for sending in federal troops to DC to deter crime.

What i find so curious about the death cult known to many as progressivism, is that as soon as they accept something like "no one is illegal on stolen land", all the people they are trying to protect, that being the people that are here illegally, can do not wrong and in the warped minds of progressives, the people they are speaking up for, that being the illegals in the country all of sudden become pure saints that have done nothing wrong in their lives and deserve to be treated as equal as any American citizen.

What this warped sense of reality does to the brains of progressive is it allows them to overlook any wrong doings of the people that entered the country illegally because in their warped brains the illegals are VICTIMS, and once someone or a group is labeled a VICTIM by progressives, that person or group is to be protected at all cost. Meaning, anything illegal or immoral the so called VICTIMS for is to be overlooked because their victim status is more important than their actual illegal actions!





I would like to bear my testimony and say that I am so happy that when I left the Mormon religion that I wasn't foolish enough to become a member of the progressive death cult!
