As a historian, are there any civilizations that haven't had a mythology about a prior golden age?

The privileging of the past as an ideal time is practically hardwired. I don’t know of many cultures that don’t have some kind of myth of a better past, but I also don’t know every culture. The question in my mind is, given the existence of modern historical method, why people continue to imagine a better time in the past and be manipulable by appeal to that mythology.

People reminisce about the good old days, a time when things were “better”. But it’s mostly a false memory because they have molded the memory to only include the things that they have liked, and removed all the problems that actually existed at the time. As an example I’ve got older relatives who voted in favour of the UK leaving the EU because times were better when the UK was independent. When I would point out that there were two World Wars in that era, the conversation dried up.

People who believe the past was better are, from what I’ve seen, always deluding themselves.
