About three weeks ago my wife and I were at the gym and this old lady was hacking and coughing for the entire hour she was there. She was at times within a few feet of us, and we just kept looking at each other wondering if the coronas had made it here. Who knows, man.

Damn people.

I haven't felt particularly well for about a week now but I think it's only a low level sinus thing going on. Taking measures to tamp that down good and proper. Or it could simply be paranoia lurking under the surface of my thinking.

I want to show you this. You guys know I follow crime cases and that there's one in progress right now. Yesterday was the defendants first court appearance.

Take a look at this crap. Observe her attorney behind the table, not the one in the jury box. If this time stamp doesn't work. Start it RIGHT at 3:15. And it gets worse.

Lemmie wrote:Thanks for the thermometer information.

We recently replaced ours and our kids, when I tried it the first time my temp was 96 degrees. Given I was not then nor had I recently been trapped under ice in a frozen lake, hypothermia seemed unlikely so I chalked it up to calibration issues. Then I fully read the instructions and the problem resolved itself. Go figure. accuracy is still not the best, so I’ll try the basal thermometer, thanks!

You're welcome! Normally we'd just show up at the doctors if we knew we were coming down with something. In this case though, I'd be using the patient portal messaging system or JB would be doing his face time thing they do at his practice or calling, and we'd need to report our temp so the doctors could advise as to whether or not we need to be seen in person, and where. It seems that high fever is really the first glaring symptom of this virus so it behooves all of us to make sure we've got a working thermometer.

Do you know what? Amazon has NO old school thermometers on their site. I wonder if those are still a thing anywhere? Not sure the younger generation would even know how to read them and I didn't look around Walmart for them when I was there just earlier. I bet we have one somewhere though...

This is a very unique event in human history: The first global pandemic of the Information Age.

The world is like a beach town facing a category 5 hurricane. We can see the satellite images. We know it's coming. Instead of plywood and candles, we buy masks and hand sanitizer. Where will the storm make landfall? How much damage will it cause? We don't know. The town shuts down. Everyone goes home and waits for the storm to pass.

But COVID-19 is a pandemic, and it will not pass over the world in days, rather it will last for many many months. And while we wait, we watch commerce and social intercourse grind to a halt.

For many of us this isn't our first rodeo by any means. From and early age I learned to prepare and adapt by watching my parents go through levels or preparation and rationing/prioritizing supplies. I've been through hurricanes, floods, ice storms, power outages in winter, tornado, earthquake and wildfire evacuation.

The last time I was seriously ill, much as EA described earlier, was the end of 1999. I thought I was legit going to die from that. I'm not saying I'm bullet proof or anything. But I feel confident in my ability to foresee and prepare.

I think I'm pretty resourceful and well prepared right now. Will I get sick or get sick and die? I have no control over that. But it won't be for lack of preparation, I can tell you that much. Hell if push came to shove, I've got advanced outdoor survival skills to rely on.

My own kids have learned by watching both of us and participating in preparation practices. They, too, have survival skills out the wazoo. Though when I mentioned rationing to them last week they seemed skeptical where this week they are believers. The first long blizzard and power outage we had here we ended up putting the contents of our freezer outside to keep it frozen and got to the point of melting snow for water to flush toilets and drink--our first experience with power outage and electric well system out in the boonies! Now we have a generator to prevent that from happening and enough gas to run it for quite some time. Live and learn! If I have to stay put for a couple of months or more, I'm confident that we're all set. Maybe 'top off' a few things here and there. Otherwise we're as good as we're gonna get.

I'm happy we have Internet now. I mean if we ran out of food I could always watch a youtube video and figure out how to field dress a deer.

Trump almost always has breathing weirdness when he has to be serious and is in over his head. He also tends to have a falling voice tone with stilted speech.

That’s actually consistent with my local health department’s guidance. No need to stay home unless you develop symptoms, even if you have close contact with someone who later tests positive.

It's varying from location to location depending on how seriously people in charge are taking the prospect of asymptomatic spread. I would absolutely want the President of the United States, a person who fills a vital government role and routinely interacts with senior leadership within the government, to be held to a high level of caution. I'm not sure how bad it actually is if we lose members of this particular group of people, but on principle the President should be tested and should model caution to the public.
