New studies in several countries and a large coronavirus outbreak in Massachusetts bring into question reassuring assertions by US officials about the way the novel virus spreads.
These officials have emphasized that the virus is spread mainly by people who are already showing symptoms, such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing. If that's true, it's good news, since people who are obviously ill can be identified and isolated, making it easier to control an outbreak.
Is this true? I thought it was common knowledge people could be infected and be asymptomatic for up to ~15 days...

Conflicting information in the initial papers on it from what I've read. Asymptomatic spread is possible, so it's inappropriate to advise if you're asymptomatic you're not infectious.
Both suggest that the US has a somewhat smaller number of hospital beds per 1000 population than Italy. Perhaps you are getting the US mixed up with some other country?
I'd like to find a way of believing that you are neither:
(a) A lying piece of **** nor (b) Just pulling figures out of your ****.
Can you help me with that?
I'm also curious where subgenius got those numbers. Everything I've read and heard this past week from people I assume are using the most recent statistics is the US has less than 3 beds per 1000 people. If subgenius has a better source with more recent data that shows the US actually has far more than that he should post it here. It would be great news. I'm guessing he either pulled it out of his ass and assumed nobody would question it (dumb assumption on this board) or he got it from one of his right-wing sources, but I checked Breitbart and Infowars and don't see it there. He probably heard it from ajax who heard it at one of his KKK meetings. But seriously, subgenius, if your source is solid, post it and educate us.

There is far too much confusion in the messages that the public is receiving.
I'm watching a video of today's presser with Trump. He's praising the press.
Go figure.

This is from our local news station. I believe I mentioned the 80 year old woman previously who died.
Here's what we know about the 3 #COVID19 cases in El Paso County from the health dept:
- Man in his 40's, *This is the first case, he has now recovered - Woman in her 80’s, *She died March 13th, had pre-existing health conditions - Man in his 60’s, *He had played bridge with the woman who died
Several people who had close contact with the woman in her 80's have tests that are pending. They are currently under medical evaluation.
They've identified the actual bridge club to the public. Poor old woman. Just went out to do her thing and now this...
Grocery stores are beginning to reduce hours of operation here now. I think that's overall a good thing. Except for the obvious fact that stores that run 24/7 like Walmart will now be crowded. One of our Walmart's has closed.

Our neck of the woods again. Really appreciating these folks and our Governor right now.
Local Disaster Emergency Declaration for El Paso County
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Release from El Paso County Public Health) - El Paso Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mark Waller signed a local disaster emergency declaration for the county due to developments related to COVID-19.
“The safety and well-being of our citizens is our top priority,” said Commissioner Waller. “This declaration enables us to access additional medical resources and utilize emergency procurement policies. Until further notice, people should go about their normal lives with a few modifications to help limit the spread of the disease.”
Primarily, this declaration will allow El Paso County to activate the Medical Reserve Corp., which can help alleviate the burden for medical personnel. In addition, it will also help local medical providers obtain personal protective equipment.
El Paso County Public Health began monitoring the spread of COVID-19 in December and activated an incident command on February 14, 2020. The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. That same day, Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a State of Emergency. Yesterday, an El Paso County resident—a woman in her 80’s with known medical history—succumbed to the disease.
“Our community is strong and we can face this challenge together,” Waller stated. “Now more than ever, it is important to take the necessary steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19: stay home if you’re sick, thoroughly wash your hands, avoid close contact with people with flu-like symptoms, clean and disinfect surfaces frequently, sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, and avoid touching your face.”
All the pictures of people defiantly going to crowded public spaces is really dispiriting. We're sprinting into a disaster that could have been partially avoided.
