but here in the US 20 year old girls get arrested for having sex with 17 year old boys. Just retarded.

As a parent, I really want my children' teachers to have it clear in their heads that:

1. If they have sex with my kids, they will never teach again.
2. If there is any significant element of coercion or manipulation in the way they got to have sex with my kids, they risk spending getting a criminal record too, possibly involving a prison term.

I'd hope that case (2) would rarely apply in cases where a teacher in his or her twenties has a relationship with somebody aged 17/18, but of course it could happen.

Of course sex with a minor (under 16 where I am) should be dealt with by the legal penalties generally laid down for that.

Here's the kind of "claptrap" our friend The CCC can ignore:

Lucy Walker's mom died when she was 15, then Joseph sent her dad on a mission and moved her younger siblings away, so that Lucy could move in with him and he could pressure her into marriage. This poor 15 year old girl was reeling from the sudden loss of her mother, and then her father was sent away, her siblings sent away, her family completely broken up. She had no one. She was totally alone. Joseph came to her 'rescue' with a marriage proposal.

While living in the Smith home, Lucy remembers:

“In the year 1842 President Joseph Smith sought an interview with me, and said, ‘I have a message for you, I have been commanded of God to take another wife, and you are the woman.’ My astonishment knew no bounds. This announcement was indeed a thunderbolt to me...

He asked me if I believed him to be a Prophet of God. ‘Most assuredly I do I replied.’...

He fully explained to me the principle of plural or celestial marriage. Said this principle was again to be restored for the benefit of the human family. That it would prove an everlasting blessing to my father’s house.” “What do you have to Say?” Joseph asked. “Nothing” Lucy replied, “How could I speak, or what would I say?”

Joseph encouraged her to pray:

“tempted and tortured beyond endurance until life was not desirable. Oh that the grave would kindly receive me that I might find rest on the bosom of my dear mother...Why – Why Should I be chosen from among thy daughters, Father I am only a child in years and experience. No mother to council; no father near to tell me what to do, in this trying hour. Oh let this bitter cup pass. And thus I prayed in the agony of my soul.”

Joseph told Lucy that the marriage would have to be secret, but that he would acknowledge her as his wife, “beyond the Rocky Mountains”. He then gave Lucy an ultimatum, “It is a command of God to you. I will give you until tomorrow to decide this matter. If you reject this message the gate will be closed forever against you.”

Lucy said, “This aroused every drop of scotch in my veins...I felt at this moment that I was called to place myself upon the altar a living Sacrifice, perhaps to brook the world in disgrace and incur the displeasure and contempt of my youthful companions; all my dreams of happiness blown to the four winds, this was too much, the thought was unbearable.”

Not a nice man, Smith, was he?

If something like the Judaeo-Christian deity existed, I would have expected that he might have spoken to Smith with some acerbity on the topic of Smith using his name to terrorise teenage girls to get them into bed with him.

But alas, he does not exist. And Smith escaped the legal process that might have led to a more earthly arraignment.

Just pointing out that Smith was, as I have myself said, not a nice man.

Do you think his behaviour in this case did meet minimal standards of decency for an adult male dealing with a vulnerable teenage girl?

You are showing people here you are not a good person with continued dishonest attacks in order to avoid admitting what you know about Joseph. I had always like your participation in other threads, but here it has been very despicable.

Silly me. Here I’ve been thinking there’s a distinction among committing a crime, being convicted of a crime, and being punished for a crime. I wonder if all those prisoners on death row know they’ve already been executed? And how about that guy in Vegas — we’re all really lucky he didn’t murder anyone.
