Suicidal ideation is real and it is real with teens. There are many resources available and the appropriate response may come from a variety of providers, including hotlines, parents, teachers and doctors - to name a few. What it should not include, is some whacked as “F” social contagion advocate who would be so blessed to help a kid make an irreversible decision because of whacky ideology. They are kids. They have rights. The deserve to have adults in the room and not propaganda and trends.

Given the link that I included earlier, are you prepared to toss all evidence in favor of gender-affirming surgery as mere ‘propaganda and trends’ ? Does it have validity at any age?

Kish, while this is not a question asked of me. I am curious how this fits in your view, one that I seem to align with.

This is more serious than a minor getting a tattoo or fixing a funky ear. I draw the ethical line at no for minors, with or without parental consent. It, can, wait.

I would generally agree with that restriction but there are considerations for minors who may be exhibiting suicidal behavior.

I’d rather have most of my child here than none of my child here, were it to come down to that.

I can find myself with some agreement with both Canpakes and Whiskey here. The opening link about the detransitioning young woman presents honest concerns. It presents one person's experience and may well not fit others. Her young suicidal ideation was quickly diagnosed as a result of gender disphoria. She felt railroaded into this and the treatment resulted in serious emotional problems. It was not a solution but an aggravation of problems.

It is possible that sex change really fits some people but I think it should be obvious that that treatment should be approached with caution and enough age to make well considered decisions.

It may be obvious but worth remembering that to be born a boy or girl does not mean a person must fit narrow or specific gender roles that social convention proposes. A youth should take some time to do some being themselves. Protection to do that is I think better than hurried decisions to alter biological forms.

I would add that the evolution of these “fits” by individuals is not complete in childhood and should not be permanent. Respected with dignity? Yes. Permanent and final? Hell no.

This article argues against surgery in her case. Looking back she questions its value, better learn to work with the construction you have as alterations have some negative aspects.

I would see the article encouraging caution. Seriously.
