Tip of the hat to actor James Woods, whose politics were very different from Rob Reiner's, for going on Fox News and sticking up for Reiner. He was able to speak respectfully about Reiner's tragic death without casting aspersions or making nasty insinuations.

"When people say horrible things about Rob right now, I find it, quite frankly, infuriating and distasteful," an emotional Woods, 78, told Fox personality Jesse Watters.

"Did I agree with his politics? I did not. Did I love him as a friend, as an artist, as an icon of Hollywood and as a patriot? I most certainly did. And I am just absolutely devastated by this terrible event, especially for his family."

Woods was nominated for best supporting actor in the 1996 movie "Ghosts of Mississippi," directed by Reiner and also starring Alec Baldwin and Whoopi Goldberg.

"I knew Rob Reiner because at a very, very down point in my career, Rob literally saved my career and really put me back on track in a way that was so important and rewarding in my life," Woods said. "He really fought for me when the studio didn't want me in a movie."

There are multiple Republican affiliates who have objected to the soulless, demented, and self referential Truth Social comment. And when I say "comment", I mean godless and depraved brain vomitus of the President of the United States of America.

With Nick Reiner's history of paranoia, frequent episodes of rehab for drug addiction, and schizophrenic episodes, it is not out of the question that a successful defense by reason of insanity could be made. I have little doubt that he is mentally ill to a significant degree. He certainly needs to be incarcerated for the rest of his life, but as for the death penalty, I am adamantly and unalterably opposed to that!

I will probably dust off The Princess Bride this weekend to pay homage to him. Maybe this will be the time I can finally get my son to make it all of the way through. An incredibly talented director and storyteller.

So from what I've read the 2019 moratorium on capital punishment was lifted in 2021 and there have been no executions as of 2024. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it's a given that he'll make use of an insanity defense following which he'd likely be remanded to a state mental hospital for the remainder of his life. I say that because he apparently has a history of discontinuing his prescribed medication once he begins to feel well, then symptoms return and that's where the trouble begins. If he were to be discharged from a state mental hospital, there's a better than even chance that he'll stop taking his meds and be a danger to himself and others. He quite obviously can't be trusted to stay on his meds. It's kind of like a flight risk situation. He wouldn't flee but he'd likely reoffend. I don't have a crystal ball but that's how I see it given what I've seen, heard, and read so far.

I am against capital punishment, too, however when an offense involves a minor child such as sexual assault (to which I have a visceral reaction) and find myself leaning in the other direction.

I may have said this in another post but since Nick Reiner is probably back on medication already, I wonder what his reaction will be to the horrific nature of the crimes he committed and will he ever fully grasp the trauma inflicted on his own siblings, relatives, and close friends of his parents? The celebratory nature of the holiday season will forever be felt as trauma for the rest of their lives.

There are rational reasons for being against capital punishment, principally that a mistaken conviction followed by a judicial killing is irreparable. And there have been a lot of mistaken convictions in the past, and likely to be more in future. There is also the fact that states with capital punishment have not, despite some peoples' expectations, on the whole ended up with lower rates of homicide.

Making a decision about whether the power of the state is or is not to be used to end the life of a person subject to its laws is too important a matter to allow any influence from 'visceral reactions': a cool head is better than relying on the gut. But if you want a visceral reaction to consider, there are many people who have a pretty strong one when they consider the revolting processes that are used in some US states to kill criminals convicted of capital crimes - do you want to live under a government that does that kind of thing for no rational reason other than that some people with loud voices like the death penalty?

When I used to volunteer as security for a weekly homeless outreach feeding/clothing event, there would be the occasional person show up who had been awake for a few days from meth (**story time below**). It was exponentially more difficult than the few regular people who suffered from advanced schizophrenia. The paranoia and hallucinations were usually combined with pretty extreme aggression. When they would show up, our night would be filled with breaking up non-stop fights that they were instigating. With the people who had schizophrenia, there were ways to help defuse situations, and they were rarely if ever violent. With the people who had been awake long enough from meth to start hallucinating, there was nothing we could do other than reactive damage control.

One such individual would fill me and the other gentleman who volunteered as security with absolute dread when he would show up. He only ever seemed to show up after he had been up for a few days, and it was absolute chaos. There was no reasoning with him, and talking to him, there was only the tireless hours of nonstop trying to not let him harm someone else, or someone else harming him. To me he was an absolute lost cause, and was the only person that I actually felt a type of hatred for in those years of serving. I would be in pain for days every time he'd show up, from the accidental blows I would take, and the strain of pulling people off of him and him off of other people. As someone with a pretty hefty streak of social anxiety and introversion, it was emotionally and mentally devastating to have to deal with as well.

About a year (I think? -- time and memory are weird) after I had stopped volunteering, I received a call from the other gentleman who would do security. He asked me if I could wrangle a donated coffee maker for someone in need. This wasn't particularly unusual. All of the volunteers would reach out to each other when they had someone in need of a particular thing, as we had all developed pretty robust networks of people who were constantly looking for opportunities to help those in need. Coffee was also a staple for people trying to get sober, so a coffee maker was a pretty common ask. What was unusual was that he asked me to meet him at the house for the person it was meant for (normally, I'd just give it to the volunteer to pass along).

When I arrived, there were about 10 others there waiting, most of whom I knew and recognized from volunteering. Eventually a car pulled up, and out stepped the man I had written off as a lost cause, and that I had grown to hate. He had gained at least 30 pounds of healthy weight, his complexion was clear, and he had a spring in his step. This was his home, that he had just moved into, after completing a sobriety and job training program with a local nonprofit. He's now inching up on almost a decade of sobriety, has reconnected with his formerly estranged daughter, is gainfully employed, and living his best life. He constantly makes his way into my thoughts to remind me (and hit me with some shame) that I had written off another human being entirely, and abandoned all hope for them.

I am a big fan of capital punishment. Doesn't seem even mildly more cruel than life without parole.

If prosecutors weren't so damned corrupt and judges weren't retards we would have more appropriate judicial outcomes.

Also. Sex offenders who hurt kids can be given a capital punishment. That is fine.
