Del City, OK — Over the weekend in Del City, Oklahoma, an off-duty police officer fired at least 12 rounds at a man who was suspected of shoplifting from a Wal-Mart store. The suspect, who was later identified as 28-year-old Kenneth Lee Simmons, reportedly paid for multiple items and had a receipt, but was suspected of having more items in his cart than he actually paid for.

It is unclear whether or not he was actually shoplifting, but the officer has come under criticism because the punishment obviously does not fit the crime.

Carlsbad, NM — On March 21, 2020, 25-year-old Charles “Gage” Lorentz was shot and killed by a National Park Ranger at Carlsbad Caverns National Park after he was pulled over for allegedly speeding on a dirt road. Body-camera footage of the incident was recently released, showing that Lorentz was unarmed and did not do anything to provoke the force used by National Park Ranger Robert Mitchell. He was merely dancing.

In the video, Mitchell is seen ordering Lorentz to spread his legs and he complies at first, but then he started dancing to music that can be heard playing from someone else’s vehicle nearby. This act of defiance enraged Lorentz, who began commanding Lorentz to turn around and take his hands out of his pockets, and when Lorentz did not immediately obey, Mitchell shot him with his taser. At that point, the body camera cuts out for twenty-six seconds, and when the video resumes, Mitchell is on top of Lorentz and then fires his gun twice shortly after — once in the leg and once at point blank, directly into his heart.

Yeah, I remember you pointing this out to me years ago but I could never remember the name of it until I came across it again on social media. I was sure all the front page stuff was from years past, but shocked to see this stuff was very recent. I would have thought that cops would be more reluctant to engage in this behavior given the current state of our society judging them for every move they make. Not smart people.

Yeah, I remember you pointing this out to me years ago but I could never remember the name of it until I came across it again on social media. I was sure all the front page stuff was from years past, but shocked to see this stuff was very recent. I would have thought that cops would be more reluctant to engage in this behavior given the current state of our society judging them for every move they make. Not smart people.

The upshot here is there is evidence that police misconduct is getting better, not worse. It's just that the baseline is so atrocious and progress so incrementally slow that there's no shortage of frustrating stories to draw from. Though, with the sheer volume of police abuse brought on by the protests against police abuse, that trend probably at least temporarily reversed. Lotta heads gettin' cracked. It'll be interesting to see what happens when things calm down.

Perhaps the current system for recruiting police officers does not place much stress on evaluating the ability to think about how society at large (as opposed to their 'buddy group') will view their actions?

Professions that require people to rely on each other for basic safety like policing are more susceptible to a "snitches get stitches" culture that is rampant in police departments. You have to actively combat it.
