Any techos out there?

Post by _mormonmistress »

I'm in desperate need of help. Not sure if anyone here is a computer tech, but it's worth a go. I just opened my outlook and downloaded hundreds of return to sender, mailer-daemon emails. Someone's been spamming using my domain name as the return address. Just checked again, a few minutes later and there are 96 more. Argh.

Is there any way I can stop this happening? I guess I better go and see what google can find for me. Groan.

That depends on where the messages are getting sent from. If they are from your computer, then your best bet is a virus scan, or my favorite, a re-install. http://housecall.trendmicro.com is one of the best free virus scans out there.

If they're not being sent from your computer, but with just your address -- try changing your e-mail password.

There's more stuff you can do, depending on how much control you have over your e-mail server, but at that point, it gets out of the range of forum advice.

If all else fails, PM me for rates on my work. I can do remote support, or server administration. And, all the profits (after my booze budget) goes directly into helping this site out.

Thanks but google proved it's worth yet again, for free (heh). Not a virus. Spammers just change the header to pretend it's from my domain but their IP was in there. I found it and reported them to their ISP. Found a site which gave me details on how to change the DNS server information so it doesn't happen again. I'm going to change hosting provider as it happened on a much smaller scale before and they said there was nothing I can do.

Yeah, this is what I suspected to being with. It is extremely easy to make the return to address someone elses, or even to fake the whole email to make it look as though it came from someone else entirely. I am suprised that they did it so lazily as to keep their ip in the header. I used to (for fun) when I was a child, spoof email addresses and send out tons of crap porn to people I hated. One of these guys actually asked me why he was receiving butt porn from the president of the US, lol...
