I know because I have an English friend. It means you want to have a baby.

Technically, it is the term used to refer to hens who are ready to hatch eggs. A hen will lay eggs every day for a long time without any intent to sit on the nest to start to hatch the eggs. Then a part of her anatomy starts to heat up. It is called the brood spot. When it gets uncomfortably warm for her, she begins to sit on a clutch of eggs. She turns them continually to keep the cool side against the brood spot. This keeps the eggs turned so they will hatch. And keeps her comfortable.

That is what "broody" is. But it can be pulled over to refer to higher animals, although not technically correct.

It can also be used to describe a meditative or contemplative mood (I always picture Jane Austen's male characters as "broody").

Ah that makes me feel a little better although the context I used it in was slightly different. I was discussing marrage, having had an institute lesson on eternal companions.
