Reactions to the Presidential Debate

Since we kind of overtook Jersey Girl's "I hate the political debate" thread, I thought I would start a new one for those of us who DO want to discuss the debate. LOL
Here is my initial reaction:
What I liked about McCain is that he really understands the battlefield, and war strategy. That was very obvious by the detail he went into during his answers regarding terrains, etc.
However, I was impressed with Obama's overall foreign policy knowledge, and I like his stance on the economy. Obama does not have the detailed knowledge that McCain has, but if he surrounded himself with the right people, he would be OK. I appreciated his overall vision.
Comments?

I thought McCain started out shaky and at times seemed close to incoherent, but as time wore on he was able to put Obama on the defensive. I thought his rhetorical strategy was effective, and that it will make an impression on voters. He made Obama appear to be inexperienced and naïve.
Obama looked to me like a college professor who is inadequately prepared for lecture. I thought his attempts to focus everything back on the Iraq debacle were unsuccessful.
I have tried to separate out my feelings concerning the two as candidates and just report my impressions of how they came off as debaters.

The debate we a toss up. I thought they both had strong and weak points. McCain impressed me with his over all knowledge and experience, Obama seems really smart and to have a good grasp of things. I am also impressed that he would be more restrained with use of our military and use diplomacy but would use it if needed.
McCain does much better in a forum like this than he does in speeches.
Obama did better in appealing to the masses and ties McCain to the unpopular George Bush (which in many ways is not fair and even disingenuous).
McCain really did make Obama look inexperienced by his references to his many world wide trips and his grasp of geopolitical issues.
I think the debate was tie.

McCain is old. My father in law is a little older than him, he falls asleep at awkward times, foregets things and has many aches and pains. Imagine him looking into the evil eyes of Putin, a man that would have him on the mat in a second. I think people vote for people like themselves, not a uppity "elite" black person who is not one of us.Its interesting how more men vote for MCain than women. I notice women often marry men like McCain in the first instance (Macho, Gungho) and wish they had married someone like Obama. Michelle has made it on her own, why McCain's wife has inherited her wealth. The book The Real McCain says he once called his wife a c---t after she teased him about his bald spot. I cannot imagine Obama talking like that to his wife. Voting for McCain is voting for Palin president, an person they r trying to protect from the media. But then u elected Bush, bottom of his class, murders the english language so would not surprise me. Someone you can indentify with.

I wonder if Glen Beck was serious about killing Michael Moore. And he is a Mormon convert

I deeply fear you may be right on this one. And, I am ashamed that I voted for Bush. I was bamboozled. Gore tried to warn us of the neo-con agenda, but our media wouldn't give him any attention when he raised the issue. I was deeply concerned about the way he ended up in the presidency--i.e. the Supreme Court decision. I thought it was a partisan decision. Frankly, I think we are in a mess.

We are in a mess.
But it is not just Bush.
Frankly there is a lack of moral back bone and leadership from both sides. Our political leaders only act when there is crisis like we have now. The Democrats and the republicans have failed us with the financial debacle, they have failed us on energy policy, they have failed us with a misdirected preemptive war (though I blame the Bush admin for that mostly).
My policy this year I think is to vote for the opposing part for president and have only voted for one democrat in my life and that was the county DA!! Then for all other offices I will vote for whoever is running against the incumbent.

Agreed. There is much blame to go around. Maybe I will vote for Barr.

I thought McCain won for reasons pretty much already covered here, but Obama did a lot better than I expected. I was really looking forward to making fun of his trademark "um uh" spam and he ruined my night, damn him.
I don't know that McCain won by enough to tip the scales back in his direction. If the next two debates go better for Obama, then last night's debate won't have mattered much.

I certainly didn't vote for him, and I certainly can't identify with him, either.

I'm ashamed you did, too. My personal philosophy is that anyone who cannot form a coherent sentence is not qualified to be President of the United States.
