Big UP is an Urban phrase used by Jamaicans. It migrated into NY and then directly to the L.A. area and was used in the early and mid nineties in some Dance Hall and Hip Hop music.
Basically it means, Right On!, Good Job!, Respect! The latter is probably more accurate.
In conversation I use it with casual friends and associates. I'll always end a phone call- Big UP! It just transferred to the message boards.
If I don't give a Big UP! then it means you've personally offended me and I can't bring myself to write it. Doesn't happen often. And don't take that as an invitation to push me. I have a hard time when I feel threatened.
Come on bcspace. I call you an asshole one time and you treat me like a heretic. I've been on MADB for a long time and you've never said anything to me. Is there something else that has caused this ire between us?
