Big UP!

Big UP is an Urban phrase used by Jamaicans. It migrated into NY and then directly to the L.A. area and was used in the early and mid nineties in some Dance Hall and Hip Hop music.
Basically it means, Right On!, Good Job!, Respect! The latter is probably more accurate.
In conversation I use it with casual friends and associates. I'll always end a phone call- Big UP!
It just transferred to the message boards.
If I don't give a Big UP! then it means you've personally offended me and I can't bring myself to write it. Doesn't happen often. And don't take that as an invitation to push me. I have a hard time when I feel threatened.

Hmmm...I always took it as self congratulatory. I see no reason to change that assessment.

Perhaps you are from a different generational demographic and don't have the same referential points as the Lamanite does.

I can understand why some people think I'm a jerk, etc., but Lamanite? Unbelievable.
