80's Thread

I graduated from high school in 1990. Unlike many other folks I've met, I really liked high school. In band, I played the French Horn and mellophone. In a pinch, I would fill in for a missing trumpet player. I was in the Honor Society, the Chess Club, theater...if it was nerdy, I was there.

I was a typical 80's southern girl with huge hair and probably too much make-up. I had "tiller" bangs going, just like all my friends, and hair plastered with Aqua Net and blow dried away from my temples. Kind of like crunchy bat wings. I loved my big hair! I worked hard to get it as huge as possible.

I wore shirts with big shoulder pads and jeans with high waists. I had tiny purses which I wore diagonally across my torso. The tinier the better.

Of course, I watched Brat Pack movies. I listened to the Cure, the Violent Femmes and Big Hair Bands, too. I had a crush on Axl from Guns-N-Roses. And Ian from The Cult. (I still have a crush on Ian! It's the skull on his black cowboy hat, I think...)

A month after I got married, my mom and dad had a terrible house fire. It was a total loss. My former bedroom, where all my pics from high school were located, had probably the worst damage. All of my pictures burned. Even my wedding photos. I hadn't even seen them yet, as I'd moved to California immediately after my wedding. Until yesterday, I had only a few pictures of myself in band, and all in huge group shots.

Digging around in an old box of photos at Mom's, I found a single picture of me taken in 1989. Depending on exactly when the pic was taken, I was either sixteen or seventeen years old. I can't say how thrilled I am to have it! It's in bad shape. Something chewed the corner, and there are rust spots or something on my face and the corners of the picture. But, the amazing 80's hair is there! The bangs. The hair wings. And the shoulder pads.

I'm so dating myself, but here it is (Sorry about the poor condition.):

If anyone else is brave enough to post an old high school pic, that would be fun, no matter if it was taken in the 80's or not.

Lots of other folks on this board grew up in the 80's. Feel like sharing favorite songs from the decade? Or weird 80's oddities or favorite movies? It might be fun.

Still likes Frogger and Pac Man,

KA

Only the beautiful people can contribute to this thread. Those of us who are toads hope what is buried stays buried.

Your post is gagging me with a spoon, John Larsen.

I know what you look like. You're, like, totally not toadly. Now, post a senior picture! :)

Or that picture of you wearing your favorite Alf t-shirt. Whichever.

KA

PS. Hilarious song, BCS!

The tricky thing is to get your kids to love the 80's.

My son's favorite song is "Sweet Child o' Mine", and he loves Tron (I took him to a screening a few years ago, so he saw it properly in a big theater). We have "Family Ties" and "Cosby Show" on the TIVO. Now all we need is another cold war.

I was a freshman. You wouldn't even have noticed me.

My cat.

I was digging through some old pictures last week. If I ever buy a scanner, I'll post some of them. They're pretty funny.

I'm sure everyone noticed you, SK. You're too tall not to notice! (That's a good thing. At least you don't have to climb onto your kitchen counter top to reach things on the highest shelf in the cabinet. Not that I know anyone who does that.)

Cinepro, my oldest daughter loves Better Off Dead. She goes around quoting it all the time.

Wants her two dollars,

KA

Not a majority, but that's how a lot of girls (cheerleader, popular, blonde, rich types) talked in the early 80's.

The tricky thing is to get your kids to love the 80's.

My kids love 80's music because that's what I play around here and in the car mostly. They are always suprising their teachers with the "old" music they know. Funny thing is half the time they're not aware the song they like is from the 70's or 80's though they are getting better at recognizing the styles of each decade.

Now all we need is another cold war.

Just trot out songs like...

Red Skies - The Fixx

Stand Or Fall - The Fixx

an empty face reflects extinction
ugly skies divide the nation
desecrate the population
there will be no exaltation
stand or fall.......

New Year's Day - U2

99 Red Balloons - Nena

99 Luftballons - Nena

And bonus 80's group....

Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime) - The Flirts

Calling All Boys - The Flirts

Boy Crazy - The Flirts

Or how about.... I Eat Cannibals - Toto Coelo...?

Here's my senior portrait. I graduated Class of '87. I know it's blurry; all the mugshots on that particular page came out blurry, just my luck.
