Parents: did your infants do this?

Little Steve has scared the hell out of me more than once by guffawing in his sleep. I'm used to it now, and it's cute, but the first few times he did it, I thought was crying. I didn't know that newborns could laugh. He doesn't do it while awake, in fact he's just learning to smile in response to me. But every time he falls asleep, when he gets on the edge of sleep, his eyes roll around in his head, and he starts smiling, then he starts giggling. A few times he laughed REALLY loud. He sounded like a child of six months.
Have you ever seen a baby do this? He will also poke out his bottom lip when on the edge of sleep. I think he's dreaming.

It is not uncommon.

Hi Sam,
All of my babies did that too. It's so cute!
Congrats on the new baby!

Wesley (my youngest son) was famous for the "bottom lip" action.
Congrats again on your little doll baby. He's gorgeous!

Thanks for the replies, all. I'm glad to know that this is normal. He's so active in his sleep. He hums in his sleep, waves his fists (for hours), grunts...I can't sleep when he does that, because I think he's about to wake up. Big Steve just dozes off.
