Variety is reporting that John Hughes, writer/director of such famous 80s films as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, and Weird Science has died of a heart attack at age 59 while on a morning walk in New York City.

Hughes helped define 80s teen culture on film, and even made a lasting impression in the early 90s, writing and producing revered films like Home Alone and Curly Sue.

As the 90s passed into the new millenium, Hughes stepped back from Hollywood, writing and producing here and there, insteading opting to enjoy life with his family and maintain his northern Illinois farm. He continued to support the arts throughout his life and certainly his legacy is forever preserved in the fantastic films he gave us.

John Wilden Hughes Jr. is survived by his wife Nancy of 39 years, two sons (John and James) and four grandchildren. He will forever be missed, and will be celebrated even longer.

R.I.P. John Hughes, February 18, 1950 - August 6, 2009.

Wow! This is a shock!

"Ferris Bueller," "Sixteen Candles", and "Breakfast Club" are all classics!!

He was one of my favorite directors.

To die of a heart attack so young...that is really scary!
