The people's seat

Post by _bcspace »

It’s the people’s seat, and it’s up for grabs

Not hearing the actual debate, but going by the summary of the article, I would probably vote for Brown if I was in Mass. Brown shares a lot of the conservative views that I do. Surprised, BC? ;)

These are the major differences quoted between the two candidates from the article:

Coakley supports ObamaCare, opposes the war in Afghanistan, and favors higher taxes on the wealthy. Brown is against the health care legislation, backs the president’s surge in Afghanistan, and wants across-the-board tax cuts à la JFK. Coakley is an EMILY’s List prochoice hard-liner; Brown condemns partial-birth abortion and is backed by Massachusetts Citizens for Life. Coakley has no problem with civilian trials for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Brown thinks it reckless to treat enemy combatants like ordinary defendants.

One question I do have...I was unfamiliar with the EMILY's List organization before reading that article. I looked up their web page. I really couldn't get a clear-cut description of what EMILY's List promoted, other than funding Democrat female pro-choice political candidates. There really wasn't anything specific regarding what policies in the Pro Choice/Abortion arena that this organization supported. What, exactly makes EMILY's List a "hard-line" organization, as described by the article?

For instance, I am Pro Choice, but I am not in favor of partial birth abortions. My stance, as far as the pro-choice movement goes...is that the government should stay completely out of the abortion issue. I don't feel that the government should fund either side. Abortion should be a private decision between the woman and her doctor...period. Being a mother of three children, I honestly don't see how I, personally, could have an abortion. On the other hand, if I was raped, I don't know how I would react. I know that I certainly would not want the government mandating that I have the child or go to jail. My feelings are very similar to the feelings of most women I speak with who are pro-choice. This is a far cry from supporting abortion on demand.

This is why, when the article states that Coakley is "hard-lined" pro-choice, I would like to know a little bit more about what the author specifically means. There is a lot of gray surrounding that particular hot button issue.

Regardless...at the end of the day, based on Brown's stance on taxes and the military, if I lived in Mass., I would vote for Brown.

I fully agree with you here, bcspace.

Some Republican's have been known to avoid the use of the term, "the people's" because it invariably includes the help. Sometimes though it works to their advantage, along with cake as a bread alternative.

Great News! No longer one Party rule anymore.

GOP's Brown wins Mass. Senate seat in epic upset

By GLEN JOHNSON and LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writers Glen Johnson And Liz Sidoti, Associated Press Writers – 9 mins ago

BOSTON – In an epic upset in liberal Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown rode a wave of voter anger to defeat Democrat Martha Coakley in a U.S. Senate election Tuesday that left President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in doubt and marred the end of his first year in office.

The loss by the once-favored Coakley for the seat that the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy held for nearly half a century signaled big political problems for the president's party this fall when House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates are on the ballot nationwide.

More immediately, Brown will become the 41st Republican in the 100-member Senate, which could allow the GOP to block the president's health care legislation and the rest of Obama's agenda. Democrats needed Coakley to win for a 60th vote to thwart Republican filibusters.

Democratic fingerpointing began more than a week ago as polls started showing a tight race, with the White House accusing Coakley of a poor campaign and the Coakley camp laying at some of the blame on the administration. Obama flew to Boston for last-ditch personal campaigning on Sunday.

With 87 percent of precincts counted, Brown led Coakley, 52 percent to 47 percent.

It's great news. I bet a former candidate for the Illinois House $2 last July 5 that the Republicans would take the House of Representatives in 2010. My bet is looking better and better.

Enjoy it Senator, Democrats should take the seat back in 2012.
