Because the new software shows you how many people are in the Chat room while you're browsing the forum.
On top of that, I can actually participate in chat at the MADB. Can't get in here.

MA&D is run on Invision Power Services software (IPBoard). It is a far superior platform than PHPBB3, which MD uses.
Edit: IPBoard also costs money, so that could be a major downside to it.
