I saw Harrry Potter 7 last night. It actually followed the Deathly Hallows book very closely.
It makes me want to go back and read the book again. I have to admit that when I read the book the first time, I imagined these actors in the perspective roles. We've grown up with them. It was like seeing my mind'e eye on the screen! Special effects are awesome.
If you have read the book, then you know that this is Rowling's darkest book in the Harry Potter series. I was disturbed by the opening scene where Valdimort tortures and kills the Hogwarts teacher and feeds her to his snake. It is as graphic in the film as it is in the book. I would not take little kids to see this. My son is not a Harry Potter fan, so I really didn't have a fight on my hands.
I really wish they hadn't cut the movie into 2 parts. Everyone in the audience was a Harry Potter fan. We were all glued to our seats. We could have easily sat the other 2 1/2 hours for the rest of the story!
It ends right after Dobby dies...a very touching scene. And Voldermort discovers the Elder wand. Granted, it's a great cliff hanger.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but am glad I read the book to fill in a lot of the small details that the movie didn't address. The biggest one--which I'm hoping is clarified more in part 2, is Harry's father's connection with the Deathly Hallows. They didn't really mention Harry's invisibility cloak, and how it had been handed down.

In light of a recent thread on porn, I found it interesting that the industry had indeed determined that Hermione and Harry were no longer in adolescences.

They didn't show anything..and it was part of Ron's tapped into imaginary fear before killing the horcrux. I honestly thought that image was unncessary. They could have just shown them clothed, kissing. They didn't have to elude to the fact that their shirts were off. That was really the only "Hollywood" moment of the film. I'm actually surprised that Rowling allowed it.
Speaking of that...another important scene from the book that is left out is the talk that Ron and Harry had. Harry made it clear to Ron that he thought of Hermoine as a sister. It was a really sweet scene. I'm sorry that the film chose to cut it.

"Dobby doesn't mean to kill ma'am. Only to maim... or to seriously injure."
