What about Facebook?

What do y'all think about Facebook? Do you use it? Refuse to use it? Think it is great? Invasive?
I don't like it but feel that I can't not have an account. I've activated then deactivated my account about ten times.
I feel like someone who is refusing to get a TV, or drive a car, or listen to the Beatles. LOL!
Thanks for your thoughts,
~td~

I don’t use Facebook or any other social networking site, because I enjoy my privacy. Much of my extended family is total white trash, and all their drama spills out on Facebook for all the world to see. It’s funny enough in the abstract, when it gets filtered down to me via my sister or mom, but to actually see it in pixel form is a bit much for me.
I also enjoy bring mysterious (I am anonymous, but I do deliver!) and enjoy my privacy. I prefer to keep my inflammatory opinions out of Google searches until I’m somewhat professionally established and not at the mercy of committee gate keepers.
I also don’t care much about my friends or families day to day activities. My friends fall broadly into two groups, those starting families and those who refuse to grow up. So hearing about the electrical wiring in their new house or how many times their baby boy ruined their diaper just doesn’t appeal to me like it would a Mom. With my friends who refuse to grow up, I really don’t care how wasted they got over the weekend or seeing pictures of them doing shots, I stopped caring about partying when I turned 24.
I’m sure social networking will really appeal to me when I want to reunite with old Army buddies and people I knew in high school way back Ought ‘1 or ‘2, but I’m still a bit young for that. I’m sure when I 40 and my mid-life crisis starts, I’ll seek out my old glory days by telling the same old long tales about what I did and with whom, but I’m not at the Gramps level yet.
I pretty much enjoy the outlet that message boards give me, so I’ll stick to that till they don’t satisfy my need anymore. On the plus side, not having a Facebook ipso-facto makes me counterculture, which allows me to out-hip even those who live the avant-garde lifestyle like Blixa (she does indeed, Facebook quite a bit) and that in itself is impressive.

I'm not quite sure how to read that. I guess I will shut up. No more of the same old long tales.......
O.K. Hearing you loud and clear.

LOL! Don't take it like that! I just needed a target for a vicious backhanded comment, and I wanted to give Kish and Honor a break, so I put you into the rotation. I love your McMurrin and Thai Spinner stories.

Ditto for me; several activations and deactivations, but in the last deactivation I removed all of my entries and photos to ensure Facebook cannot access them. Nearly two years ago I did a blog about Facebook,
Facebook or Farcebook, but against my better knowledge and judgement I returned a couple of times after that entry. This isn't of course to denigrate those who feel that Facebook is the best thing since sliced bread. It can indeed be a great social networking site, but in my opinion privacy concerns outweighed the benefits of that social network. It also seems to me to be a "gossip network", but there is the option of adjusting your privacy settings to a close circle of friends and relatives you know you can absolutely trust. If I ever went back on Facebook I'd use that option, and probably limit "friends" to about a dozen people.

I have gotten a lot of dates from Facebook. You meet a girl and then she adds you to Facebook. Then end up talking and getting their number.
I find Facebook convenient when I want to show my family and friends pictures of a vacation I went on.
Other than that I could care less if you ate a cheeseburger at mcdonalds.

If that was my intention, I'd still be there. I "pick up" the "sexiest" women in town
all the time, and many of them end up vomiting on the back seat. Life isn't only about "pussy".

Nothing you can't send by email as well, but if you like Facebook, may your adventures be fruitful. I wish you more luck and good fortune than I've had there.

Hi TD,
I tried Facebook for a while and then deactivated my account. I was having problems with scam-like visitors.
Probably put too much personal stuff out and was getting messages from the Ivory Coast asking me to help people get their money. Things such as, My husband is being held prisoner by the government, and if you allow me to deposit $100,000 into your bank account, you can hold it for me, and take a percentage,
all you have to do is give me your bank details etc......
I may be an idiot at times in my life, but I don't wish to be cleaned out!
Friends Reunited can be a help in finding long lost school or college pals, but I tend to stick to E-Mails these days. Rambo seems to be having fun with Facebook for dating etc., so it's not all bad. Social Networking sites are for the younger generation methinks, usually by my time of life (mid 60's) people have created their network of pals and amorous liasions.

Your right life is not all about pussy. It has been more than dates I really think that's were some of my relationships have started with Facebook. As an example I met this one girl a couple hours out of town. We ended up being Facebook friends and then we started chatting and then we went out for a few months. I find girls are way more willing to add you as a Facebook friend and then they start chatting with you. Girls are less shy with Facebook for some odd reason. When in real life they usually wouldn't as for your phone number.

that's true you can send all the pics by email but I guess if your lazy like me then this is way easier. There have been many times where I am at someones house and we start talking about a trip I went on or they went on. If it's me then I bust open their computer and show them the pics using Facebook. I really do think it is way more convenient. I think I would find it annoying to grab 300 emails and send it to all those people. Do I have 300 close friends? No but I see most of these people once and a while and we can keep each other up to date pretty easily. I have gone through my Facebook account and delete people I will never talk to again. It is pretty weird when they want to add you back.
I really think the younger generation has really grown a liking to Facebook. Sometimes I thought Mormons are more addicted to it but I don't think that is the case at all. I have co workers that check their Facebook accounts often.

Yeah, it did seem kind of awkward that my friend request has been sitting there for months. . . now I know why! ;)
I see how a gal might be more willing to give out her Facebook rather than her phone number. She gets to check you out as well and make sure you have other friends besides only your mom and that your status history are things like "hanging out with the friends", "traveling to 3rd world country to feed the poor", etc., instead of "building a homemade bomb", or "I'm so excited my local Kmart is selling bullets again!" etc.
Truth Dancer-you must commit or get of the pot. This back and forth can't be doing you any good. . . friends/family probably will start to stress that you must hate them or something!
