Who thinks frosting is just as (or more) important than the cake it is put on?

I voted no. Only because I've eaten cake that no frosting could make palatable. Pretty on the outside, awful on the inside.

Well, Quas, would that not indicate that frosting is just as important as the cake?

Consider this:

"I've eaten frosting that no cake could make palatable."

You could have the greatest cake in the world with a crappy frosting and you will see the cake as a whole becomes crappy.

And with wedding cakes, it is very likely that the frosting is more important than the cake because weddings are focused on decor more than say, birthdays. In the wedding situation, we have a ">" thing.

It could be a zero sum game.

Eating the frosting off a bad cake or eating the cake from under bad frosting.

Either way, if there is a dog under the table, one can always slyly slip the inedible parts under the table cloth to avoid offending one's host (poor dog).

It is true that someone with my baking skills can cover a multitude of sins with a fancy frosting.

If either the cake or the frosting tastes terrible, the entire dish is ruined, even if you try to scrape off the frosting. So, yes, in my estimation the frosting is as important as the cake itself. Thus sayeth the reaping.

Zeez, you can also get the chocolate cake/rum filling/chocolate frosting combo as a cake bar, if you don't want to buy a whole cake. But get the cake and spring for extra over-the-top flowers and put some nice bit of poetry on it for Mrs. Zeez! When I was growing up all my birthday cakes came from Mrs. Backers. They usually had china figurines on them with some sort of April theme. Those were the days.

Also let me just state that I abhor garbage like Cake Boss and the legions of jerks who use fondant icing to make ridiculous decorations. Fondant icing is itself an abomination. True cake decorating is done with butter cream and a frosting bag.
