Tough question.
At the moment, Tom Wilkinson tops my list for current male actor. Every performance I've seen by him is exceptional. Other Male actors would include Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem (most people in this country only know him for the villain in "No
Country for Old Men"... check out his foreign language films), Daniel Day-Lewis, Al Pacino in his earlier roles (not so much in his later ones). I also have a fondness for the "Old School" guys. The Royal Shakespeare bunch. John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Derek Jacobi, etc.
For female actors, at the top right now would be Meryl Streep (she can play anything), others would be Amy Adams, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren and a dozen others. I've only seen Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron Howard's daughter) in a few roles so far (50/50, The Help, Hereafter). From what I've seen, she is going to be great.
I'm leaving out hundreds of others.
