I don't have the contempt for Trump that a lot of people do. Is he a reprehensible human being? Sure, but take a number, there's many reprehensible human beings out there.

He does have his unique brand of dirty business, one that he's been extremely successful with, as a failed businessman otherwise. He surrounds himself with lawyers, lies about everything, but has a brilliant sense of how to do so in a way to maintain deniability and allow others to take the fall. Could he eventually get enough officials from the bottom rung to the Supreme Court to say the sky is green -- or that he won an election he lost? Seems like there's a chance. Don't get me wrong, there is a chance he could become a dictator, and a destructive one.

But he's no Hitler. Hitler was a purist. Hitler had clear ideals and unwavering conviction, and most of that was rooted in hate. Trump, on the other hand, might hate people who get in his way, but he's more about himself and being popular. I mean seriously, I kid you not, his entire drive in life is to be the prom queen everybody talks about.

Yes, he had his us-vs-them platform, "build the wall...har har har". He's probably racist in the same way he despises the poor because he is rich; it's not really that personal. At the end of the day, he profits from outsourcing like all his peers.

I think it may have been the Sandy Hook shooting; he was just getting started. He's a puffy rich guy who doesn't care about guns and he stood up to the NRA. He naïvely thought that loved by all that he was, that he could find a compromise. He quickly learned. The NRA blasted him, and he backed down and took his place. A crushed prom queen who had failed to be liked by a few of the guys at school.

Trump doesn't care about anything that his platform stands for. He's not a Christian in any meaningful sense. He doesn't really care about abortion and stuff like that. He certainly doesn't give a crap about guns. He doesn't even really care about taxes as he gets out of that either way. So, in the right circumstance, he could actually be an okay leader -- not a great one, but okay.

Is he a "bad ass" in the sense of a rugged man who can tame a horse? No. Hitler knew what he stood for and didn't have to compromise. Trump's ability is to take the personality cult he'd built on TV and adapt that to politics. If QAnon will believe in him, he'll imply belief in QAnon. He's very observant when it comes to what his base wants.

Trump could be an okay leader in a climate where his base is made up of good and decent people. In the case of Hitler, it was Hitler. In the case of Trump, it's the low moral quality or poor education of his followers -- they imagine the ridiculous, much of which has trickled down to them from pervs on 4chan, and Trump conforms himself to be their fantasy. The savvy ones are just in it for the low taxes -- you've got to get enough votes somehow, and if it's by swaths of Americans becoming loons, then it takes what it takes.

Trump is as much of a bad ass as the actor who played the Marlboro Man but didn't smoke or drink, and just happened to look like a cowboy.

Trump dodged the draft something like 5 times.

Your whole post is a neat dissection of Trump's public image, to which your opponents can (it appears) muster no counter-argument apart from abuse. That is in itself a compliment to your writing.

Thank you, Chap. Maybe A-Mike will have a substantive reply. Having known my fair share of gun-toting right-wingers in the west, I'm fascinated to learn by what standard Trump could possibly be construed as a "bad ass".
