Should nontaxpayers be allowed to vote?
It will be interesting to see how this country responds to the growing number of welfare recipients. It's coming very close to 50%. Once more than 50 percent of the voting population becomes eligible for government welfare of some form, I don't see how the Republicans will win another election. I don't see how the Democrats will ever balance the budget either. I suppose only time will tell what the consequences of that debt will be.
I personally don't see why people who don't pay taxes should even be allowed to vote. What are they going to say with their vote? Yes, make those who pay, pay more to provide for me. It's easy to be generous with other peoples money.

And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

State and local taxes. Payroll taxes. Sales taxes at the bare bare minimum. Everyone pays some form of taxes.

Re: Should nontaxpayers be allowed to vote?
I've heard reports that as much as 50% of Americans do not pay taxes. It's hard to avoid paying sales taxes. But a large number of people work under the table to avoid taxes that are taken directly out of your paycheck.
I found this thread very interesting, http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum ... 326829/pg1
The way some of these state rules are written, even more people would be eligible for welfare than the number of people who actually take advantage of it. Thankfully many people are too proud to work the system. But that number is shrinking.

Your report is in regard to federal taxes (the number is around 53%) but people still pay local and state taxes and sales taxes (although a couple of states don't have sales or state taxes). But working people also pay payroll taxes or into state/federal pension plans if they aren't eligible for Social Security benefits.
In addition plenty of working people take government welfare in the form of charitable deductions, mortgage interest deductions, child deductions, farm subsidies, working for companies that get subsidies from the government (including military contracts and farm subsidies).

Not counting certain churches whose enterprises border on tax fraud, or whose business practices are so secretive that they are probably hiding massive tax fraud.

Ajax,
Should businesses that pay no taxes or pay a negative tax rate because of millions or billions in tax subsidies be allowed to vote? Corporations are people too according to the Citizens United decision.

The reason for business tax priviledges is not out of equity or justice, but rather to grow the economy. If you don't give businesses special favors, you could end up with an economy like WV, not very productive at best.

If the country can draft you to die for it than you certainly can vote.
Then again, maybe only literate white male property owners should be allowed to vote.

You think oil is not valuable enough that it requires subsidies? Or GE or Verizon or Wells Fargo aren't in lucrative enough business sectors?
WV has a bad economy because it 1) doesn't have easy access to the ocean (so lack of shipping) 2) is mountainous and thus difficult to easily travel/transport goods to/produce agricultural products and 3) it's mineral resources, coal, is not as valuable as natural gas or oil. Not to mention the tradition of lacking education and technological backwardness (not unlike my own state of Kentucky).

Don't forget they must go to church and teach Sunday School every week.
