Jerome Corsi, the political writer and conspiracy theorist, is traveling with the Mitt Romney press corps today.

Corsi, 66, writes for World Net Daily and is the author of several anti-Obama books, including Where's the Birth Certificate? The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President.

Asked why he was traveling with the Romney campaign, Corsi told POLITICO, "I am a Senior Staff Reporter for WND covering the campaign."

In recent months, Corsi has argued that President Obama may be gay or bisexual and that his wedding ring bears the Islamic declaration of faith, “There is no god except Allah.” In 2004, Corsi wrote the controversial Unfit for Command: Swift boat veterans speak out against John Kerry, which was criticized for factual inaccuracies. Per The Guardian, U.S. news outlets "have accused Corsi of being anti-Islamic, anti-Catholic, anti-semitic and homophobic, and of exploiting racial prejudices in an attempt to 'scare white America.'"

Romney campain press secretary Andrea Saul did not respond to a request for comment.

Perhaps next the Romney campaign will invite along someone who claims Obama is really an alien from Mars.

Maybe I'm missing something, but there is a large contingent of reporters from a broad spectrum of news outlets. Yes, WND is a fringe paper, as Droopy and bcspace have demonstrated ad infinitum, but why is this an issue at all, let alone pandering? Please elaborate.

Am I mistaken in assuming that the campaign has some control over which reporters are allowed to actually travel with them? If I am incorrect, and this was something foisted on Romney beyond his control, then I retract my criticism.

No. Is there any equivalent of this nut? And do campaigns have a say in which press travels with them?

you should likely find out on your own..."nutty" is sometimes relative.
However, i believe that the press are somewhat controlled by the campaign, in as much as scheduling and being "uninvited"...i seem to remember that happening to the Pelosi kid when she did that really good documentary with Bush.
It would likely be standard practice to have a certain amount of press along on your own dime as it were. 99% of news these days is simply a press-release anyway.

Yes, the candidate has some control over what press travels with them. The major news sources are always represented, though who they send is negotiated. The more fringe partisan sources, like WND, are chosen by campaigns as a political maneuver. There's only so much room on the bus, so to speak.
