"Fearful Kids More Likely to Hold Conservative Political Views as Adults"

Parenting style and childhood temperament might play roles in shaping one's political mindset, new research suggests. Specifically, kids who have fearful temperaments and are raised by parents who value obedience are more likely to endorse conservative ideologies as young adults, the study found.

So if you want to raise disobedient children who turn into jailbirds, addicts, and other non productive members of society, raise them liberal? Agreed.

Thanks, bc. I was hoping you'd nibble.

I was thinking more along the lines that children raised by thoughtful, kind parents would be more likely to be generous, sympathetic and concerned for the less fortunate among us.

Children raised by strict, authoritarian parents would be more likely to have much less compassion.

I believe that a very high percentage of 'jailbirds' have suffered abuse as a child.

Yes. But then they wouldn't be liberal.

I agree Bcspace. Give us anal retentive children rather than liberals if that is really a choice.

If we're talking about politics, how can "compassion" be part of the discussion? There's nothing "compassionate" about forcibly taking money from one person and giving it to someone else.

It may be necessary for whatever reason, but it can't be "compassion", and we should never fool ourselves into thinking it is.

Unless being liberal means thinking it is "compassion" to do so. In that case, it's a worldview based on a misunderstanding.

Liberalism is a false compassion as you have illustrated.
