In the fierce headline debate over the so-called fiscal cliff, our newly reelected president argues that “a majority of Americans agree with [his] approach.” That approach, according to the president, is “to combine spending cuts with revenue — and that means asking the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more in taxes.”

Well, that’s not exactly what the exit polls said.

To the question “Should taxes be raised to help cut the budget deficit?” only 33% answered “yes” while 63% responded “no.” Isn’t that interesting? Nobody’s talking about this exit-poll nugget.

Both Boehner and Obama are digging in their heels but Boenher is the only one who has the backing of the people.

The exit poll data on the question to raise taxes on the wealthy was 47% yes, 35% no, and 13% raise taxes on everyone. That's 60% for raising taxes - not for reducing the deficit, but for stimulating the economy.

The 63% tax increase response was on raising taxes as a way of decreasing the deficit and did not discriminate between those making over $250,000 and the other 98% of Americans.

You're pretty deceitful, BC. Time to hand in your temple recommend.

in my opinion, The Republicans in Congress should agree with Obama on raising taxes on People making over one million dollars a year, but not on People making less than one million dollars a year.

CNN makes it sounds like Obama only wants to raise taxes on those making $250k/year or more, just like the old Clinton line. Is that really the worst that Democrats are going to do? Obviously I'd have no reason to fear such a tax increase. I'm not sure I buy into the idea that reducing/not increasing taxes on the +$250k/year crowd will reduce the unemployment rate, especially with welfare pay being plenty competitive with the crap jobs that would be created and the border not being secure.

Californians raised taxes on everyone by vote this past week. They must be true believers in socialism, and while Obama has no more elections to face, not using the $250k/year caveat still seems like political suicide if you want to represent the rest of the country. We know what they're saying on CNN but what do we believe? Anyone have any predictions on whose taxes will ultimately be raised on taxmageddon?

Yes, Proposition 30 did indeed end up Passing in California. Proposition 30 will end up increasing the State sales tax from 7.25% to 7.5% starting on January 1, 2013 there. California will very soon clearly have the highest State sales tax in the Nation. Proposition 30 will also increase the income tax rate on individuals making over $250,000 a year there. And the income tax increase on individuals making over $250,000 a year will apply retroactively to all income earned or received since January 1, 2012 there.

Maybe I'm not understanding something but this article doesn't sit well with me. It almost sounds like the %3 will throw the rest of the common folk in the Republican party under the bus to protect their estates. I don't think the government should be able to take their money either. But look what we've lost in this election. If what CNN is saying is true, it's almost as if stopping this 5% tax hike on the +$250k camp is the ultimate priority of the Republican party. They'll give up anything before this.

With welfare and unsecure border, how is creating more jobs going to create a jobs worth having? I don't think reducing/not increasing taxes on the $250k people is going to change the unemployment situation much. What happened to welfare reform, phasing out social security, securing the border, and getting rid of this leviathan Obamacare? None of that is even an option because they stubbornly hang on to protecting the 3% above all things. Mitt Romney campaigned on increasing taxes on the wealthy and lowering taxes on the "hammered," middle class. John Boehner should just hand the 3% over to the wolves and if the economy really tanks because of it, it'll be a good lesson for the voters.
